Kenny Wheeler był wybitną, niezwykłą postacią na światowej scenie jazzowej. Był – bowiem ten kanadyjski trębacz i kompozytor, zmarł 18 września 2014 r. w Londynie. Miał wtedy 84 lata.
Był artystą o otwartym umyśle, nie istniały dla niego bariery stylistyczne, potrafił odnaleźć się niemal w każdym gatunku muzycznym, wszędzie odciskając własne piętno. Kenny Wheeler w 1952 r. przeniósł się do Londynu stając się odtąd elementem europejskiej sceny jazzowej. Nieobca była mu awangarda muzyki improwizowanej. Uczestniczył w twórczym zamieszaniu lat 60. i 70. będąc członkiem zespołów The Spontaneus Music Ensemble Johna Stevensa, Globe Unity Orchestra, formacji takich muzyków, jak Evan Parker, Tony Oxley, czy Derek Bailey. Kulminacją tego nurtu twórczości trębacza był angaż do kwartetu Anthony’ego Braxtona, z którym spędził pięć lat (1971-1976).
Dopiero po odejściu z zespołu Braxtona Wheeler na dobre rozpoczął autorską, nagraniową karierę – od 1975 roku datuje się jego współpraca z dla monachijską oficyną ECM, dla której zrealizował bardzo wiele albumów, m.in. „Deer Wan” (1977 r.), „Around 6” (1980), „Double, Double You” (1984), „Music For Large & Small Ensembles”, „The „Widow In The Window” (1990), a zwłaszcza sztandarową „Gnu High” (1975). Na tej ostatniej towarzyszył mu m.in. Keith Jarrett (był to jeden z nielicznych albumów, na których zagrał jako sideman po zakończeniu współpracy z Charlesem Lloydem). W 1997 nagrał album „Angel Song” będący niemal kwintesencją „najpiękniejszego brzmienia powyżej ciszy” w towarzystwie takich muzyków, jak Bill Frisell na gitarze, Lee Konitz na alcie i Dave Holland na kontrabasie. Był także członkiem grupy Azimuth (z Johnem Taylorem i Normą Winstone).
W latach osiemdziesiątych – jak większośc kreatywnych muzyków tamtego czasu – rozpoczął współprace także z włoską oficyną Soul Note nagrywając dla niej wybitne (chociaż nieco zapomniane) albumy autorskie („Flutter By Butterfly” i „All The More”) oraz uczestnicząc w licznych sesjach jako sideman. Tu zresztą jego dyskografia jest naprawdę olbrzymia, a nagrywał niemal z wszystkimi ze świata jazzu, ale współpracował także z kreatywnymi muzykami rockowymi, jak choćby z Davidem Silvianem (pojawia się na jego nagraniach z lat osiemdziesiątych). Można go usłyszeć także na płytach Joni Mitchell, Philly Joe Jonesa, Johna Abercrombie, Steve’a Colemana, Billa Frisella, George’a Adamsa i Jacka Kochana (płyty „Alberta” i „Tomorrow’s Dreams”).
Na niniejszy boks złożyły się wszystkie nagrania w których uczestniczył w ramach oficyny Soul Note – oprócz obu autorskich albumów także te dokonane z zespołami Claudio Fasolisa i Paolino Dalla Porty oraz wraz z European Music Orchestra.

THE COMPLETE REMASTERED RECORDINGS ON BLACK SAINT & SOUL NOTE is a monographic box-set collection aimed at recounting the most beautiful chapters that revolutionised the history of jazz. This new series was launched in March 2010 with the simultaneous release of four box-sets, including albums by some of the artists who participated in the success of the outstanding labels. A philological work, beginning with the original recordings on multi-track master tapes, patiently integrally remastered paying strict attention to the sound quality.

Five later albums from trumpeter Kenny Wheeler – each presented in a tiny record-style sleeve, and packaged together in a sweet box set! First up is Flutter By Butterfly – warmly expressive work from trumpeter Kenny Wheeler – a set that's got the same depth of tone as his work for other labels, but which has a bit of a different feel as well. The record has maybe a bit more bite – not necessarily on Wheeler's trumpet or flugelhorn, the latter of which still retains its wonderfully airy sound – but instead on the overall conception, which makes careful but creative use of other group members – especially John Taylor on piano and Dave Holland on bass, as well as Billy Elgart on drums, and Stan Sulzmann on soprano, tenor, and flute. All tunes are originals by Wheeler, and really lovely ones at that – and titles include "Gigolo", "The Little Fella", "Miold Man", "We Salute The Night", and "Everybody's Song But My Own". Welcome has Kenny Wheeler working in a group with Claudio Fasoli on reeds – in a piano-less group that also includes Jean-Francois Jenny Clark on bass and Daniel Humair on drums – on titles that include "If Only", "Invisible Sound", "Epic", and "Oblivion". All The More is a dark quartet side that features the great John Taylor on piano – alongside Furio DiCastri on bass and Joe LaBarbera on drums! Taylor really brings out some moody moments alongside Kenny Wheeler's trumpet – and titles include "Phrase One", "Summer Night", "All The More", and "Kind Of Bill". Tales features a quartet with Paolino Della Porta, Stefano Battaglia, and Bill Elgart – on tracks that include "Night Breath", "Lullaby For Ugo", "A Place To Sing", and "Mbira". Last up is Guest – a record that features a larger group – the European Music Orchestra, conducted by Claudio Fasoli – with solos from Kenny Wheeler and Aldo Romano. Titles include "The Sweet Yakity Waltz", "Lyrical Touch", "Horizons", "Alex & Tom", and "WW".

“Recorded at a time when trumpeter Kenny Wheeler was playing regularly in bassist Dave Holland's band, this quintet outing with Holland, Stan Sulzman (who switches between soprano, tenor and flute), pianist John Taylor and drummer Billy Elgart features six of Wheeler's originals, some of which were written quite a few years before. “These 1993 recordings (released on a 1997 CD) are an excellent showcase for trumpeter Kenny Wheeler. Six of the eight compositions are his (all but drummer La Barbera's "Kind of Bill" and the closing standard "Summer Night"); Wheeler's mostly mellow-toned trumpet matches very well with the lyrical piano of John Taylor (who has worked with Wheeler on and off for 20 years), bassist Furio Di Castri and La Barbera. Wheeler can sound so peaceful and wistful that it is always a surprise when he displays his wide range and hits some impressive high notes, as he does in spots throughout the set. His originals are complex yet friendly, unpredictable but logical, always seeming to develop gradually until their conclusion. He is also very democratic in allocating solo space. Well worth picking up.”

"Tales"
“This quartet session features the compositions of bassist Paolino Dalla Porta and pianist Stefano Battaglia, along with Kenny Wheeler's trumpet and flugelhorn solos and drummer Bill Elgart's rhythmic support. While Porta has solid technique and excellent tone, and Battaglia offers a reasonable approximation of Keith Jarrett's playing style, this date doesn't quite manage to inspire. That's mostly due to Wheeler, whose playing wavers and occasionally falters. His flugelhorn solos are more mellow, better executed and successful, but as the principal soloist outside the rhythm section, he's not always up to the task on this date. There's nothing here that's disturbing, just little that's either inspiring or memorable.”
