Seprewa to tradycyjny strunowy instrument z Ghany, o prostakątnym pudle niczym domek dla ptaków, pokrewny korze, ale - jak twierdzą uzależnieni - o bardziej jędrnym, pełniejszym brzmieniu. Wirtuozi seprewy grają tu takie pulsy, że wokół topnieją śniegi, a niedźwiedzie budzą się z zimowego snu z nadzieją na dance party, koktajl z parasolką i spontaniczny akt prokreacji. A przesłanie, choć śpiewane w narzeczu Akan, jest czytelne jak z nut: 'Wszystko w życiu przemija, smakujmy każdą chwilę' ('Nkasoo'). Korzenie afrykańskiej muzyki tanecznej highlife. Antydepresant...'

Ghańczycy nie gęsi, swój instrument mają. Nazywa się seprewa. Wyglądem i sposobem gry (dwa rzędy strun szarpanych przez wszystkie palce) przypomina malijską korę. Ma jednak mniej, bo dziesięć strun i pudło rezonansowe w postaci drewnianej skrzynki z okrągłymi otworami po bokach. Inne jest i brzmienie-świeże, pogodne, nie tak niebiańsko-liryczne jak w przypadku kuzynki z Mali.
Prawdziwa różnica pomiędzy tymi lutniami leży gdzie indziej. W grze wirtuozów kory zasłuchują się miliony ludzi na całym świecie, muzyka to bez wątpienia najważniejszy towar eksportowy Mali. O Seprewie zaś jeszcze niedawno słyszało nawet niewielu mieszkańców Ghany. Na instrumencie, bez którego przez stulecia nie wyobrażano sobie ceremonii królewskich, uroczystości religijnych i wiejskich wesel, grano już tylko w kilku wioskach.
Gitara skutecznie wyparła swą prababkę z użycia i pamięci. Trend odwrócili niedawno trzej wybitni ghańscy muzycy, ze znanym gitarzystą Karim Banamanem na czele. Oprócz niego i dwóch seprewistów na płycie pojawia się jeszcze masa muzyków obsługujących instrumenty mniej (Fender Rhodes) i bardziej (kalimba, rozmaite perkusjonalia) tradycyjne. Słuchanie tej przesłonecznionej, radosnej płyty odpręża nawet w warunkach narzucanych przez marzec made in Poland.

Żyjemy w świecie zdominowanym przez kulturę masową, w której królują produkcje made in USA. W czasach jednostronnej globalizacji, warto poszerzać horyzonty własnych zainteresowań muzycznych. To zadanie znakomicie spełnia-spotkanie z dżwiękami grupy Seprewa Kasa z dalekiej Ghany. Tytułowa seprewa to tradycyjny instrument strunowy z prostokątnym pudłem rezonansowym-przypominający malijską korę, ale charakteryzujący się pełniejszym brzmieniem. Pomysłodawcą Seprewa Kasa jest najsłynniejszy muzyk z Ghany-gitarzysta Alfred Kari Banaman, znany z formacji Osibisa. Jego partnerami są wirtuozi seprewy: Balffour Kyerematen i Osei Korankye, w tle pojawia się flecista Teddy Osei/Osibisa/, bas, Fender Rodes oraz sporo instrumentów perkusyjnych. Muzyka pełna hipnotyzującej pulsacji, harmonijnych wokaliz i oraz adoracji radości życia. Bardzo dobre brzmienie-barwne i klarowne.

The seprewa is not called 'soul of Highlife' for nothing - it is likely to be the greatest African instrument you'll ever hear. This fresh and delicate but seriously endangered Ghanaian instrument is a cousin to the ever popular kora from Mali, with a more earthy sound. Three virtuoso musicians have shared their ideas and passion to re-explore the traditional sounds of Seprewa and origins of Highlife in an acoustic contemporary setting with breathtaking results.
With the introduction of the guitar to West Africa the more ancient seprewa was near forgotten. As little as ten years ago it was hard to find just one seprewa player in every twenty villages and most people didn't know the instrument had even existed. According to Seprewa Kasa guitarist Kari Banaman, who has played with legendary bands such as Osibisa, it is not until the recent recording of this album that the seprewa has begun to come back into use.
The release of this album is the culmination of a six-year journey beginning with Kari laying eyes on the instrument, played by Osei Korankye, for the first time at a festival in Switzerland. Until then, he too had only a vague idea of the instrument's existence. After jamming backstage at the festival the musicians decided to take the sound back to Ghana to record the album. Seprewa Kasa explores the vibrant roots of Highlife, which lie within the seprewa, resulting in a contemporary recording that reinvents both the instrument and the musical style.
Kari Banaman is one of Ghana's best-known guitarists who, amongst others, plays with the legendary African band Osibisa. Seprewa player Osei Korankye has been playing the instrument since the age of twelve and was taught by his grandfather. He is recognised as a seprewa virtuoso and is currently a lecturer at the International Centre For African Music and Dance at the University of Ghana. Baffour Kyerematen is a tutor at the School of Performing Arts, also based at the University of Ghana. As well as being a highly skilful seprewa player, Baffour is also widely acknowledged to be one of Ghana's finest traditional dancers.
This beautiful acoustic recording, bringing us the inimitable sound of the seprewa, was shaped by these skilled musicians, whilst jamming under the palm trees surrounding the University of Ghana, in Legon. The three men turned to the seprewa for inspiration, hoping to revive the forgotten sounds of this ancient instrument. This recording highlights the tranquil, sun-kissed atmosphere, as the group explore the dazzling roots of Highlife. Seprewa was loved by kings and workers alike, and today the story of the instrument has finally found a new voice.
