First, there was the trio of “The Space Between” (Clean Feed), where we could find saxophonist Rodrigo Amado, violinist Carlos “Zíngaro” and bassist Ken Filiano dealing, as the title of the record implied, with questions related to distance and proximity between human beings – not only musicians, but individuals, with their distinct ideas and personalities. Now, Amado gathers a new quartet, with cellist Tomas Ulrich joining the band, dealing again with the concept of sound reverberating on that space between, making the final result a product of, not only the individual lines played by each musician but also the energy liberated by the confrontation of those sounds.

From the first recording to the present one, it’s obvious that proximity won. “Surface” introduces the skin factor to the proposed music game. There’s a strong empathy going on in these tracks. This new combination of creative inputs may be subtitled “For Alto, Baritone and Strings”, but you won’t listen to a duel between saxophones and bowed section, and if you suspected this would be a free-bop collection of pieces bathed in a chamber like context, it’s better to change expectations right now, because “Surface” isn’t so easily described. What we have here are four musicians in a construction project, cooperating instead of putting their respective egos in the arena, reacting instinctively to each atom of energy fed by the music itself. Music of the 21st century, hybrid, open, collective, with a jazz format and a classical “savant” dimension, even if it’s always impossible to tell where the frontiers are. After this, we can only imagine that the next step will be going to the flesh.
