Editor's info:
8 tracks appear here on CD for the first time ever!!!!
Two impressive 1977 trio sessions by the great Al Haig plus, as a bonus, five amazing piano solo tracks.
One of the most exquisite bebop pianists, Haig plays a mixture of tunes here, including many compositions by Bird and Diz.
Includes 8-page booklet
When the great Charlie Parker picked a young white guy named Al Haig as the pianist for his quintet in 1946, a lot of people were surprised. However, Haig was one of the very first pianists to follow the trend started by Bud Powell, and his technique, style and impeccable taste earned him the right to be in Parker's group. Although Haig became known for his distinctive and pioneering bebop style, he in fact spent much of his career playing in non-jazz contexts and didn't gain the recognition he so justly deserved until the 1970s. In his last years (he died on November 16, 1982) he would make more than a dozen albums. Two of these LPs - both of which were recorded in 1977 - have been compiled here. Jamil Nasser (born George Joyner in 1932) remains the bassist throughout these dates. The last five tracks are piano solos, and it is interesting to compare the trio versions of 'Con Alma' and 'A Night in Tunisia' taped on November 2, 1977 with those of the same tunes recorded in a solo piano setting three days later.
