Lynne Arriale, Alon Near, Lukasz Zyta: Being Human

63,99 zł
Brutto

Being Human traktuje o tematach ważnych i trudnych, poruszanych z typowym dla mistrzowskiego warsztatu kompozytorskiego Arriale wigorem i zrelaksowaną i czasami zabarwiona melancholią narracją.

Lynne Arriale, laureatka International Great American Jazz Piano Competition 1993 przedstawia swój siedemnasty autorski album!
"Being Human" kontynuuje świetną passę doskonałych nagrań, które amerykańska pianistka oferuje jazzowej publiczności. Jest to zarazem jej czwarty krążek wydanym w barwach Challenge Records International. Do Lynne Arriale dołączają nowojorski kontrabasista Alon Near i polski drummer Łukasz Żyta.
"The Lights Are Always On" (Challenge Records, 2022) zadedykowana została tym pracownikom służby zdrowia, którzy wytrwali na pierwszej linii frontu pandemii COVID-19. Ryzykując swoim życiem - podobnie jak ratownicy ataku na trzy wieże w NY 11 września.

The Guardian i Lynne Arriale "poetycka laureatka swojego pokolenia".
Jazz Times napisał "Nawiązuje wyjątkową, głęboką więź ze swoją publicznością, a energia płynie w obie strony. Emocjonalna autentyczność Arriale pozwala jej widzom czuć i myśleć razem z nią".

Editor's info:
Being Human, pianist-composer Lynne Arriale’s 17th album as a leader, is her fourth for Challenge Records International. Joining Lynne are bassist Alon Near and drummer Lukasz Zyta in a suite of original compositions that explores life-affirming facets of humankind. Being Human is dedicated to the things that define our better nature, and to those individuals, whether celebrated or unsung, who personify them.

In recent years, Lynne’s compositions and albums have reflected current social issues. Chimes of Freedom (2020) highlights the worldwide immigration crisis and the experiences of refugees who risk everything to find a better life for themselves and their families. The Lights Are Always On (2022) examines the life-changing events wrought by COVID-19. Some compositions are named in honor of heroes, including those who served as caregivers on the front lines of the pandemic and those who defended American democracy

In Being Human, Lynne’s compositions celebrate the ways our lives are enriched by passion, courage, love, persistence, heart, soul, curiosity, faith, and joy. Responding to the negative effects of polarization in society and culture, Lynne created this album as an affirmation of love, hope, and unity. It is a musical inspiration to fully appreciate the incredible potential in each of us, and to live our lives individually and collectively as the best expression of what it means to be human.

“I wrote this suite in response to the division and turmoil in our world. The music focuses on qualities we all share; that define our humanity. I hope this album will be uplifting and convey a sense of unity and optimism. The dedications reflect my admiration for those who I feel personify the traits that inspired the music.” Lynne Arriale

In need of some serious uplift? Try Being Human, a sure high water mark for pianist/composer Lynne Arriale.
Locked into that too often wayward network of connections between heart, brain and her vividly emotive lyricism, Arriale's seventeenth artistic statement serves as a conduit to our shared hopes, dreams, thoughts, prayers, and best wishes for a better world. Lithesome and balletic, with a feminine mystique and facility that's essential yet hard to define, Being Human throws a warm light upon the gamut of the pianist's innumerable powers.
In close dialogue with Israeli bassist Alon Near (Billy Childs, Eli Degibri) and Poland native, drummer Lukasz Zyta (Lee Konitz, Bennie Maupin, Wadada Leo Smith), Being Human glows brightly with a shared humanity that is not, in lieu of all the chaos that abounds on the planet, a tribal one. It is a universal ten-song suite wherein each track is its own anthem.
Focusing on the qualities we inherit from each other, Arriale and company manage to stop the world in order to look at where we are, how and why we got here, and how the hell we work our way out of the quagmire. But not with the anger of partisanship. No—"Courage"with its defiant 6/8 pull, the pianist's unbounded lyrical encouragement inherit in "Passion," the folk dance, common man story told on "Faith,"—leave themselves vulnerable to all grace and solace.
Hearts willing to be open and embracing is the stoking energy behind Being Human. If that weren't so, then Arriale, Near and Zyat could not possibly pull off the effervescent free-fall found in"Curiosity," or the bluesy polyrhythmics behind "Soul," and the driving specifics of "Persistence."
Though an argument can be made that the closing "Love (Reprise)," with its electronic chorale of voices, could be a tad heavy handed, Arriale avoids didactics or dissonance. Poetic in structure, Being Human resounds with celebratory stanzas and couplets. Attuned to our greater power, our better angels, "Joy" is truly that, an island breeze bearing calypso highlighted by standout solos from all involved. "Gratitude" is a quiet and welcome meditation. It is the moment needed to hopefully inspire change.

In recent years, pianist and composer Lynne Arriale has produced music that reflects what she sees as the social turmoil and division now present in the world. Chimes of Freedom, from 2020, focussed on migration and refugees; 2022’s The Lights are Always On emerged from the Covid pandemic. Being Human, recorded in July 2023,is Arriale’s seventeenth album as leader and continues this approach. It’s credited to the Lynne Arriale Trio, which is completed by bassist Alon Near and drummer Lukasz Zyta and, as the title suggests, the music focuses on what the album notes call “qualities we all share that define our humanity.” It’s a focus made even clearer by the titles of the ten compositions: “Passion,” “Courage,” “Faith” and so on, and by Arriale’s decision to dedicate each tune either to a specific individual or to humans collectively. Hence “Persistence” is dedicated to Malala Yousafzai, “Passion” to Greta Thunberg, “Courage” to the people of Ukraine.
Such a diverse range of dedicatees is reflected in the equally diverse music. There are slow tempo tunes such as “Gratitude,” with Alon Near’s bass solo at its heart, or “Faith,” with its gentle combination of gospel and folk musics, and there are more uptempo numbers such as the flowing and melodic “Heart” and the propulsive, energetic, “Persistence.” “Love,” dedicated to “humankind,” appears in two forms. First time around it’s a trio performance of great subtlety and lyricism. Second time, Arriale performs solo, using a Yamaha Clavinova to create a choral effect that comes across as artificial and somewhat unsettling. It seems odd to use artificial human sound on a track dedicated to humankind, an anomaly on a recording that’s otherwise characterised by genuine, empathetic, human interaction.
Three tunes stand out for their immediately engaging positivity. “Curiosity” is dedicated to Jacob Barnett, a young mathematician and physicist. It’s a skittish, jagged, little tune, full of playful exploration as all three musicians improvise after the brief opening melody, a tune that for me conjures visions of kittens or puppies in energetic play rather than the earnest study of a scientist but may well be a reflection of Barnett’s own personality. “Soul” is a gentle but uplifting number, its seemingly effortless swing combining with a strong melody. “Joy” is just that, four minutes of calypso-based jollity that hits from Zyta’s first flourish on percussion and carries on to the final bar.

The composer and pianist Lynne Arriale will release her new album (the 17th) with the arrival of spring. It is pleasantly composed, radiating happiness and joy of living in a trio formation with double bassist Alon Near and drummer Lukasz Zyta. The album features a series of original compositions exploring facets of humanity that affirm life. The composer’s themes are always societal and filled with salutary humanism. This time, the theme revolves around passion, courage, love, persistence, heart, soul, curiosity, faith, and joy. Lynne states, “I wrote this suite in response to the division and turmoil in our world. The music focuses on qualities we all share, which define our humanity. I hope this album will be inspiring and convey a sense of unity and optimism. The dedications reflect my admiration for those whom I believe embody the traits that inspired the music.”
Talking about the theme is good, but let’s focus on the music. Here we have three artists in complete harmony, utilizing all their skills and extensive knowledge of classical music to bring us highly harmonized arrangements, remarkable for their poetic imprint. In the end, there are 11 beautiful, thoughtfully interpreted, sensitive, and delicate musical portraits. Yet, it is music of the present, of the immediate, and it must be a delight to discover it live.
Although we are familiar with Lynne Arriale’s work, it is the very first time you will hear her on Bayou Blue Radio. The quality of her compositions, the melodic and acute sound, the perfect mastery of the trio format, and the remarkable musicians who have gone above and beyond to deliver their best—madness it would be to overlook this album. You even get surprised by a piece like “Curiosity,” which breaks away from the other tracks on the album, bringing us great happiness. This proves that Lynne Arriale is one of the great composers of today. She also knows how to perfectly blend tradition and modernity within the same album, and this is the ultimate proof.
Undoubtedly, we have one of the great albums of 2014 here, perhaps not the most original, although… But it has the immense merit of being accessible to everyone and even managing to resonate with the hearts of journalists like myself who receive tons of albums every week because the quality of the compositions and performances makes a difference!
A little more patience is needed to be able to listen to this album among friends. It is an essential album for piano lovers, beautiful compositions, and jazz enthusiasts.
