Editor's Info:
Some people start out with it. She has waited. The songs which in the one hundred years of jazz history have proved to be standards or evergreens are very often the starting point for young musicians - and at the same time the place where they get stuck.
Blue Skies is the third album by Cassandra Wilson, the young, Mississippi born New Yorker with the dark timbre who has been highly praised by audiences and media alike for some time now. It is only on this third production under her name that she has dug deeply into the rich mine of jazz standards and brought to the surface tunes that are classic yet not overstrained.
Blue Skies offers an almost classical jazz singer, a singer clearly in the tradition of the great vocalists yet open to and experienced in the musical present, somebody who has come far in the search of her own musical identity. Cassandra Wilson moves in the area of jazz standards with the same ease as in her own music represented by her first two albums, Point Of View (919 004-2) and Days Aweigh (919 012-2), never failing to put her own stamp on the music. Her vocals are artful instead of artificial, forceful instead forced, and there is no fooling around with unnecessary ornamentation, every note is sincere and agetting down to the point.
Accompanying her are three young musicians of the same type, open to all sides and reaching back into the tradition as well as reaching forward into the future. On piano you hear Mulgrew Miller who has worked with Art. Blakey, Tony Williams, Johnny Griffin and Woody Shaw, bassist is Lonnie Plaxico who has formerly laid the groundwork for Art. Blakey, Greg Osby and David Murray, and the delicate drumming is provided by the brilliant Terri Lyne Carrington.
