From her beginnings as part of the Laurel canyon set, Joni Mitchell has gone on to become one of the most accomplished singer songwriters of the late 20th century. Throughout her career her music has continued to evolve and astound ranging from folk, pop, jazz and even avant-garde. Mitchell has many contemporaries but none experimented so much with their artistic identities or so bravely explored territory outside of the accepted confines of pop music.

After the smooth jazz-pop of Court and Spark, Joni Mitchell evolved a much more adventurous sound for her seventh studio album The Hissing of Summer Lawns. Contrasting graceful melodies in "In France They Kiss on Main Street," with Moog-driven African rhythms in "The Jungle Line," the album is a complex fusion of jazz and shimmering avant-garde pop which won Joni a nomination for the Best Female Pop Vocal Performance at the 19th annual Grammy Awards.
