Antoine Guerber stawia tu na dostojność brzmienia wokalnego ansamblu, nie eksperymentuje, chociaż nie byłby sobą gdyby nie podkreślał delikatnych dysonansów - jak w zadziwiająco mrocznym 'Gloria'. An emblematic work of the gothic period, Guillaume de Machaut's Messe de Notre Dame is, in a certain sense, a summary of his time. Just as architecture gained verticality thanks to the use of the ogival arch, the ribbed vault and the flying-buttress, as scholastic thought unfolded a new, high-flying rhetoric, music blossomed into polyphony with a verticality belonging to the same movement. A quest for light, as in the cathedral in Reims, where Machaut was a canon.
