Editor's info:
There are treasures still to be found from the Romantic period. Gjovik Sinfonietta present a beautiful album with haunting tunes for chamber orchestra from the Norwegian tradition.
That there is a certain Norwegian (in lack of a better word...) quality to Norwegian music is well known, all over the world Norwegians are being recognized just by the sound of our music. Indeed, Ole Bull sat down with the young Edvard Grieg, letting him know that only by developing a strong Norwegian sense of tone would he have any chance of making a name for himself. As we know, Edvard made the best of this advice, and indeed he became famous. But it was not only Grieg who was able to find this unmistakably national musical vein and make use of it in his compositions.
On quietude - norwegian moods Gjovik Sinfonietta present music written for chamber orchestra in the Golden Era of romantic music in Norway, of which surprisingly much is virtually unknown. The more profiled composers have put the likes of Islandsmoen, Holter, Brustad and Lie in the shadow so far. But on this releases you can hear some of the most beautiful things these unknown masters have written, presented alongside more familiar pieces by Halvorsen, Svendsen and Bull.
Gently and warm, impressive and grand - this record contains all the colours found on the Norwegian romantic palette of music. Violin soloist and leader Atle Sponberg is really at home in this beautiful music, and Gjovik Sinfonietta is a first rate chamber orchestra. Quietude brings that particular Norwegian mood the whole world knows us by, but in music that few have heard before. So just clear up some space for these new classics from Norway.
