Editor's info:
Happy Birthday! MDG has a very special treat in store for the hundredth anniversary of John Cage’s birth: three recordings featuring Steffen Schleiermacher, the Cage specialist par excellence. To get the party going, Schleiermacher has invited three friends to celebrate with him on this release, and Anna Clementi, Mike Svoboda, and Andreas Seidel do indeed offer extraordinary voice, trombone, and violin tributes to the birthday boy.
Cage’s works for voice and piano are extremely extroverted and far transcend anything the classical repertoire might have to offer. With carefree nonchalance he violates all the rules associated with this genre: the piano lid is slammed down, drumming on the piano is prescribed, and screaming is heard – and in “Four Walls” the musicians may perform side by side but not together.
The pieces for violin and piano offer an overview of the work of a lifetime. From the early “Nocturne” to the very late “Number Pieces,” the American master’s whole colourful palette of compositional and expressive resources is represented. Of special note: Cage’s admiration for Erik Satie continued unbroken over five decades.
Schleiermacher has obtained the services of a proven expert in contemporary music and admirer of John Cage in the person of Mike Svoboba. Cage’s oeuvre for trombone is quite compact – to our good fortune, since all three of its pieces, excellently performed and lovingly rendered, can be presented on a single CD.
