Prawykonanie tego oratorium odbyło się 13 kwietnia 1743 roku w Dublinie. Trzyczęściowe dzieło o życiu, śmierci i zmartwychwstaniu Mesjasza, które Handel skomponował w zaledwie 24 dni, między 22 sierpnia a 14 września 1741 r., zostało rok po pierwszym wykonaniu zaprezentowane w londyńskim Covent Garden, gdzie spotkało się z chłodnym przyjęciem, tak ze względów religijnych jak i artystycznych. Kompozytor wątpił nawet w jego sezonowe powodzenie. Handel dokonał licznych poprawek, uzupełnień i zmian, w wyniku, których nie powstała ostateczna wersja oratorium.
Mesjasz doczekał się uznania dopiero w latach 50. Po śmierci kompozytora powstało kilka nowych, przeznaczonych na większe składy opracowań utworu, m.in. autorstwa Mozarta oraz lipskiego muzykologa Friedricha Chrysandra. Szczególnym fragmentem oratorium jest chór Hallelujah, który przeniknął do kultury masowej, dzięki czemu istnieje w świadomości zarówno wyrafinowanych melomanów, jak i osób niemających z muzyką poważną wiele wspólnego. Mesjasz do dziś krąży w kilku wersjach.

Kataloński mistrz violi da gamba i dyrygent - Jordi Savall prezentuje autorskie odczytanie tego barokowego arcydzieła, i jako mistrz muzyki dawnej i barokowej przedstawia je w formie kameralnej. Brzmienie Savalla bliższe jest muzyce kościelnej niż wielkim, scenicznym realizacjom, z którymi spotykaliśmy się na przestrzeni lat. Każdy detal ma swoje ważne miejsce, nic nigdy nie jest przesadzone, powściągliwość i poetyckie uniwersum Biblii Króla Jakuba.

Wyrafinowana i niezwykle piękna muzyka, świadcząca jak bogata i nieprzewidywalna może być muzyczna twórczość epoki Baroku.

His ‘Watermusic’ is already considered a benchmark and he also signed countless landmark recordings of religious music.
