Tower of Power to jeden z najbardziej znanych zespołów funky jazzu. Debiutowali 50 lat temu, w 1967 roku, kiedy ukazały się płyty "Further Conversations with Myself" Billa Evansa, "Miles Smiles" i "Sorcerer" Milesa Davisa, "Expression" Johna Coltrane'a, "Schizophrenia" Wayne'a Shortera czy "For Adolph Sax" Petera Brotzmanna.
Ta kalifornijska formacja od końca lat 60-tych stanowi niedościgniony wzorzec dla kolejnych pokoleń artystów związanych z soulem, jazzem, funky i r&b, a jej muzyka stanowi kwintesencję gatunku. Wielokrotnie ich kompozycje trafiały na szczyty Billboardu, jak np. "You're Still A Young Man", który trafił do pierwszej 30. "Billboardu", "So Very Hard To Go", który dotarł do 15. miejsca na "Billboardzie"

Od 50 już lat Tower of Power daje swoim fanom dowody muzycznego wtajemniczenia i nie wydaje się, aby w najmniejszym stopniu traciła formę. Kto uważa, że Tower of Power najlepsze lata mają za sobą, jest w błędzie.
Miłośnicy zespołu na wydany w tym miesiącu album "Soul Side of Town" czekali aż dziewięć lat. Warto było tak długo czekać, bowiem czternaście nowych nagrań przynosi muzykę pełną rozmachu i energii, do jakiej zespół przyzwyczaił nas w ciągu półwiecza działalności.

Skład grupy ulegał wielu transformacjom, a przez jego szeregi przewinęła się cała rzesza wyjątkowych artystów, jak m.in. Dave Mathews, Richard Elliot, Chester Thompson., Lenny Williams. Do dziś jednak trzon 10-osobowego składu zespołu stanowią jego założyciele: saksofonista i wokalista Emilio Castillo, Stephen "Doc" Kupka (saksofon), basista Francis Rocco Prestia i perkusista David Garibaldi.

Sweet soul music... najsłodsza muzyka soulowa w wykonaniu jej niepokonanych mistrzów z Kalifornii, obchodzących niewiarygodną pięćdziesiątą rocznicę!
Brzmi tak samo doskonale, jak za czasów, kiedy królowała niepodzielnie – krystaliczny beat, bezlitośnie tnące powietrze dęciaki i pulsujący bas otwierającego płytę zwięzłego intro do East Bay! All Day! nie pozostawiają wątpliwości co do bezwzględnego mistrzostwa starego dobrego dream teamu.

Tower of Power trwa dalej z niezmienionym trzonem obrośniętej legendą sekcji dętej, w której są jej założyciele i autorzy większości kompozycji – Emilio Castillo (saksofon tenorowy) i Stephen „Doc” Kupka (saksofon barytonowy). Sekcję rytmiczną stanowią niezmiennie David Garibaldi (perkusja) i Francis Rocco Prestia (gitara basowa). W tym projekcie, po pięciu latach od ostatniej płyty, wzięli udział dwaj wokaliści: odchodzący Ray Greene i przychodzący Marcus Scott. Na gitarach gra Jerry Cortez, a na organach Hammonda Roger Smith. Legendarną sekcję dętą uzupełnili Tom Politzer (saksofon tenorowy, altowy, barytonowy, klarnet, flet), Adolfo Acosta i Sal Cracchiolo (trąbka i flugelhorn).

Płyta złożona została z nowych kompozycji i nie ma żadnych słabych punktów. Czternaście utworów to maksymalny profesjonalizm i niezliczone pokłady entuzjazmu. Wydaje się, jakby Tower Of Power byli w jeszcze lepszej formie niż 50 lat wstecz. Płyta kipi energią i niedoścignionym mistrzostwem weteranów oulu. Nie jest żadnym wypoconym comebackiem, ale czystą zabawą gigantów tego gatunku.

Po energetycznym wstępie East Bay! All Day! temperatura tylko rośnie w Hangin’ With My Baby, z wybuchowym intro bębnów i organów Hammonda, oraz elektryzującym wokalem Greena à la James Brown. Smith szaleje na organach, sekcja dęta tworzy jednolitą ogłuszającą ścianę doskonałego dźwięku, a całości dopełniają znakomite chórki. Tempo zwalnia odrobinę w melodyjnym Do You Like That?, nie tracąc nic na energii, aby po chwili rozbujać się w tytułowym
Soul Side Of Town, kompletnym kompendium soulu, z zawodzącą gitarą, śpiewającym pianinem Hammonda i uwodzącym barrywhite’owskim basem, słodkimi chórkami i sensualnymi saksofonami. Równie dynamiczne są Do It With Soul, Butter Fried czy Stop. Nie brakuje oczywiście ballad: słodkiej Love Must Be Patient And Kind
z nastrojowym wokalem Scotta i Can’t Stop Thinking About You oraz dramatycznej Let It Go czy When Love Takes Control. Selah wzmaga nieco tempo bluesowym lamentem opłakującym złamane serce, ale z niezawodnym, niepoddającym się soulowym pulsem i pięknymi pasażami sekcji dętej.

Instrumentalne After Hours buja się cudownym bezbłędnym funkiem, w którym królują saksofony i sekcja dęta. Płytę zamyka adekwatną klamrą wybuchowe East Bay! Oakland Style!, choć wydaje się to niemożliwe, jeszcze bardziej dynamiczne niż otwierające płytę East Bay! All Day!, do którego nawiązuje.
Soul Side Of Town to masterclass soulu. Każdy utwór jest tak kompletny, jak to tylko możiwe – każda nuta jest perfekcyjna, a jednocześnie spontaniczna. Nie bez znaczenia jest wybór jako współproducenta Joego Vannelliego, którego Emilio Castillo zatrudnił do projektu wraz z inżynierem masteringu Berniem Grundmanem. Świetne zwieńczenie półwiecza działalności zespołu.

TOWER OF POWER – the most dynamic and distinctive band of survivors in Soul Music – is roaring into its unprecedented 50th anniversary with a dynamic new disc of all new material. A labor of love, definitively titled Soul Side of Town, this package is charged with 14 filler-free songs. As always, the songs on Tower of Power’s Soul Side of Town were primarily composed by the hit-making team of founding members Emilio Castillo and Stephen “Doc” Kupka who also hold down the world famous 5-man Tower of Power Horns. For the special occasion of Tower of Power’s 50th anniversary, leader Emilio Castillo brought in a most-astute choice in co-producer, Joe Vannelli in addition to mastering engineer Bernie Grundman. Along with the legendary rhythm section drums and bass lock of David Garibaldi and Francis Rocco Prestia, respectively, TOP consists of guitarist Jerry Cortez, Hammond B3 organist/keyboardist Roger Smith, 1st tenor saxophonist Tom Politzer, and trumpeters Adolfo Acosta and Sal Cracchiolo. Soul Side of Town is also blessed with not one but two lead singers: outgoing Ray Greene and incoming Marcus Scott (boldly introduced on several selections, including “Hangin’ With My Baby”). The 10-piece Tower of Power band is prepared to throw down with a celebratory tour that will include sweet spots around the globe.


About the artist
For close to 50 years, Tower of Power has been creating their own kind of soul music. Since 1968, Tower of Power has delivered their unique brand of music to their fans, appearing before sold out crowds as they tour the world each year. Tower's rhythm section lays down a groove like no other band. The band’s horn driven sound is unique, and the way they approach everything, from writing and arranging to mixing and performing, is totally their own. Combine all of that with an outstanding lead vocalist and you have one of the most dynamic groups of musicians to ever hit the stage.

Tower's musical odyssey actually began in 1968 when Emilio Castillo met Stephen "Doc" Kupka in July of that year. When Doc auditioned during a band rehearsal at Emilio's house, Emilio's father called him into the kitchen and offered the following advice: "Hire that guy, he's got something." Doc and his signature baritone sax sound were now in the band, and on August 13, 1968, Tower of Power, as we know them today, began playing gigs, and soon became very well known in the area.

Many other bands came out of the San Francisco Bay area in the late 60's. Bands like The Grateful Dead, Jefferson Airplane, Santana, Big Brother, Journey, Cold Blood and others all helped to define the "San Francisco Sound." Tower of Power has always claimed Oakland, California as their hometown. Playing area venues and making a name for themselves, Tower of Power's big break was just around the corner.

After playing at a Tuesday night audition at the Fillmore in 1970, Tower was signed to Bill Graham’s San Francisco records and their first album, “East Bay Grease,” was recorded. All of the compositions were original tunes written by Castillo and Kupka. Their next album, “Bump City,” was recorded on the Warner Brothers label, and this led to a string of hits and memorable albums that include many of the songs that TOP fans come out in force to hear, even to this day. Over the years, the Tower of Power Horns have recorded with hundreds of artists as diverse as Aerosmith, Elton John, Little Feat, Phish, Santana, Heart, and many others, forever infusing the radio airwaves with Tower’s musical DNA.

Since the beginning, Tower of Power has never stopped touring and recording. Always in demand, the band never fails to entertain and amaze their fans. Tower is truly blessed to have a dedicated following that often travels to see the band, and in many cases fans will plan their vacation or work schedule around an appearance of TOP.

Tower celebrated their 40th anniversary in 2008 at a very special reunion show at the Fillmore Auditorium in San Francisco. In addition to the ten current members of the band, another 20 musicians and vocalists that at one time held a position with the band appeared with them. The show was filmed and is available on DVD. Of the ten current members, Emilio Castillo, Rocco Prestia, Stephen Kupka, and David Garibaldi are four of the band’s founding members. Their dedication to the music, their creative writing, and their original vision still guides Tower of Power.

Each year Tower of Power tours the United States, Japan and Europe, playing to sold out crowds all over the world. Recent releases include their 40th Anniversary Concert Blu Ray recorded at the Fillmore Auditorium in San Francisco and "Hipper Than Hip" a remstered gem that was tucked away in the Warner Brothers vault since 1974. Tower has never been busier or more in demand. New generations of fans come to see the band perform as their timeless music continues to excite fans of all ages.
