BLACK PEARLS captures Coltrane at a critical turning point in his career. Although he was still working as a sideman for Miles Davis, he had already begun to record his first albums as a leader. Just three days after recording the album, Trane participated on the Miles Davis Sextet session that produced "Stella by Starlight" and "On Green Dolphin Street". There is an obvious disparity between these three mostly improvised and lengthy jams and the Davis session. Black Pearls showcases Coltrane at the height of perfecting the intense volley that would garner the name "sheets of sound". The quintet, featuring Donald Byrd plus the classic Red Garland Trio with Paul Chambers and Art Taylor, had also recorded the music issued on the albums Lush Life, The Believer, and The Last Trane. This session would be their last together. The title track is a mid-tempo bop number. "Sweet Sapphire Blues" (penned by Prestige Records owner Robert Weinstock) is the longest track on Black Pearls. It is essentially a 12-bar blues jam.
