Marilyn Mazur jest jedną z nielicznych kobiet w panteonie sław światowego jazzu. Kompozytorka, pianistka, liderka wielu zespołów. Jest afroamerykańskiego i polskiego pochodzenia. Znana z nagrań i koncertów w zespołach takich sław jak Miles Davis, Gil Evans, Wayne Shorter, Andreas Vollenweider i Jan Garbarek.
Laureatka wielu międzynarodowych, prestiżowych nagród, urodziła się w Nowym Jorku. Od 6 roku życia mieszka w Danii. Była samoukiem w grze na perkusji i instrumentach perkusyjnych. Ukończyła prestiżową, Królewską Duńską Akademię Muzyczną. Współpracowała z tej miary muzykami jak John Tchicai, Niels - Henning Orsted Pedersen, Palle Mikkelborg czy Eberhard Weber.
Największa sławę i uznanie, przyniosła jej współpraca z tuzami jazzu, przede wszystkim z samym Milesem Daviesem. Była perkusistką w jego grupie w latach 1985, 1988 i 1989. W 1986 r. została perkusistką słynnej orkiestry Gila Evansa a rok później grała w Wayne Shorter Quintet. W 1989 r. rozpoczęła realizowanie swoich projektów Future Song i żeńskiego kwartetu perkusyjnego Percussion Paradise. W 1991 r. rozpoczęła - trwającą do dziś współpracą z Janem Garbarkiem.
W jednym z wywiadów mówi "zawsze postrzegałam tworzenie muzyki, jako nieustający proces rozwoju, doskonalenia. Nieustannie poszukuję sposobów, by lepiej, prawdziwej wyrazić swoją naturę. Dlatego tak trudno mi wskazać konkretnych muzyków, czy formy muzyczne, do których chciałabym się upodobnić. Pierwszą wielką fascynacją był dla mnie Miles Davies. To, w jaki sposób potrafił połączyć abstrakcyjną stronę jazzu z delikatnym brzmieniem i przestrzenią było niewiarygodne".

Jej nowy projekt to trzynastoosobowa jazzowa orkiestra, która przyjęła nazwę Maluba Orchestra. W składzie tego zespołu obok gwiazd europejskiego jazzu jak Fredrik Lundin, Makiko Hirabayashi czy Emil de Waal spotykamy polskiego trębacza - Tomasza Dąbrowskiego.

Maluba Orchestra zadebiutowała na Copenhagen Jazz Festival 2017. Recenzent Politiken dał koncertowi najwyższą notę. W jego ocenie to był jeden z najlepszych koncertów tej edycji festiwalu, który trzeba wiedzieć jest największym jazzowym festiwalem w Europie. Tak pisał po ich koncercie "od pierwszego momentu zespół złapał silny kontakt z publicznością, można powiedzieć, że muzyka z mety weszła słuchaczom pod skórę. Obfitość doznań, potężny skład, odwaga w budowaniu wielowątkowej, narracyjnej formy przyniosły publiczności moc doznań, czułem się jakbym był uczestnikiem rekordowych żniw dojrzałej kukurydzy, którą tak często można spotkać na duńskich polach"

Od tego czasu Maluba Orchestra stale się rozwija, często występuje na żywo, tak jak podczas uroczystości Danish Music Awards 2018, kiedy to jeden z liderów zespołu - Fredrik Lundin, odebrał trofeum kompozytora 2017 roku.

Ich płyta, która ukazała się właśnie na CD i płycie winylowej, uwodzi słuchacza szeroką przestrzenią, barwą poszczególnych instrumentów, unikalną atmosferą. Niezliczone instrumenty perkusyjne tworzą czasem pulsują tkankę rytmiczną, która jest podglebiem pod wielowątkowe narracje instrumentalistów, innym razem drumming schodzi na plan dalszy, a wielobarwna, czasem tajemnicza i nieco mistyczna narracja konfrontuje nas z zupełnie nowymi emocjami.

Maluba to zespół o dużej sile ognia, zarówno tej rytmicznej, jak i rozbudowanej sekcji dętej. O mocnym, oryginalnym brzmieniu, a wyraziste i intensywne kompozycje trójki liderów - Marilyn Mazur, Fredrika Lundina i Kaspera Baia przynosza odurzającą i uwodzicielską moc.
Debiutanckie nagranie Maluba Orchestra to triumfalne, wciągające doświadczenie odsłuchowe od pierwszego do ostatniego momentu!

Niecodzienny projekt, bowiem firmuje go aż trzech współliderów: słynna perkusjonalistka Mazur, saksofonista Lundin oraz młody i zdolny gitarzysta Kasper Bai. Niecodzienność niniejszej propozycji przekłada się jeszcze na nietypowy skład międzynarodowego trzynastoosobowego zespołu.

Choć dominują w nim kobiety, potrafi on zagrać z przysłowiową męską ikrą. Nasz kraj reprezentuje grający z pełną ekspresją trębacz – Tomasz Dąbrowski. Charakter kompozycji, jak i ich interpretacje są dość zróżnicowane.

Pastelowo brzmiąca Maluba Orchestra wykorzystuje pełną gamę rejestrów – od najwyżej brzmiącej trąbki po tak rzadkie brzmienia, jak klarnetu kontrabasowego. Marilyn Mazur stara się uwypuklić w swych tematach wątki melodyczne i perkusyjne, wywodzące się z rozmaitych kultur świata, zaś Fredrik Lundin zaproponował klimaty melancholijne, momentami pełne abstrakcyjnych zwrotów.

Najciekawiej wypadł jego rozbudowany utwór "All Is Well that Ends Well", oparty na Bachowskim chorale. Dwie kompozycje Baia są najbardziej zróżnicowane pod względem formy: "Marcology" odwołuje się do przyprawionej free jazzem współczesnej kameralistyki, podczas gdy "Hattifnat" został osadzony na frapującej zachodnioafrykańskiej rytmice i melodyce.

Together, Danish composers Marilyn Mazur, Fredrik Lundin, and Kasper Bai have found a shared passion in creating new rhythmic orchestral music for a large ensemble. The material of the three composers exploits all available sound variables, mixing in elements from all over the world in a relevant, contemporary expression that ranges from the lyrical and sacred to the wild and engaging. They’ve assembled a strong team of experienced musicians, each of whom is known from leading their own groups and also from numerous other contexts. Broadly diverse in terms of age, gender, background, and musical style, when they play together, the 13-member orchestra creates a bubbly and varied musical output, carried by tight ensemble playing with some of the Danish jazz scene’s strongest and most personal voices.

Maluba Orchestra was off to a flying start when they made their debut during the Copenhagen Jazz Festival in 2017, as the Danish newspaper Politiken’s jazz writer Christian Munch-Hansen gave the performance a coveted five-heart review. He called it one of the best concerts he had heard under that year’s jazz festival, writing “from the first note, the music went right under the audience’s skin with a large, bold, common sound as big as the as the harvest ripened corn in the Danish fields and the time we live in!”

Since then, Maluba Orchestra has established itself as a thriving live band with performances including at the 2018 Danish Music Awards – an evening where one of the bandleaders, Fredrik Lundin, took home the trophy for “Composer of the Year.”

A wonderful blend of the fresh and familiar, there is every reason to welcome this orchestra on the Danish music scene. Maluba is an ensemble with the necessary volume, rhythmic power, and sonic depth needed to explore musical possibilities, pursue fun, and chase special ideas.

The richness of the material, voices of the composers, and glorious creative energy of the soloists should not to be mistaken for an undefined, overly-loose, and/or open-minded fantasy. Maluba Orchestra’s debut recording is a triumphant, engaging listening experience from the first note to the last.

On this album, percussionist Marylin Mazur is not heard in interaction with Miles Davis, Wayne Shorter, Jan Garbarek, Jon Balke, Dino Saluzzi, Palle Danielsson, Gil Evans, or another of the many great international names that have been lining up to play with the wonderfully original Danish artist over the years. She is also not heard with any of the epoch-making bands she’s led since first taking the stage at the end of the seventies. Here, rather, it’s all about collaboration with two of the more celebrated and prominent contemporary musical personalities in Denmark. Saxophonist Fredrik Lundin is now known to several generations of musicians, artists, listeners, and appreciators. First arriving on the Danish jazz scene in 1981, this versatile, elegant, and explosive musician and composer has impressed with his 11-member roots, blues, and jazz-oriented “Fredrik Lundin Overdrive,” has charmed in collaboration with Christina von Bülow through new interpretations of Lars Gullin’s melodies, and grooved with the more rock-oriented group “Offpiste Gurus.” All this and much more while being a prominent composer and member of modern experimental ensembles, as well as theatre and jazz constellations (including in Marylin Mazur’s Group).
Kasper Bai fills out this triumvirate, and not “just” as the guitarist, but also as an original and virtuosic voice, who besides being diligently used as organizer by other artists is also a prominent composer, creating numerous works for symphony orchestras, big bands, choirs, chamber ensembles, and much more.
