Nagrywająca od lat późnych lat 50. norweska wokalistka Karin Krog, dała się poznać zarówno, jako wyjątkowa interpretatorka jazzowych standardów jak też śpiewaczka twórczo sięgająca po norweskie tematy ludowe. Nie boi się eksperymentować, w jej pierwszych zespołach debiutowali Jan Garbarek (płyta "Moments"), basista Arild Andersen i Jon Christensen. W późnych latach 60-tych nagrywała z orkiestrą trębacza Dona Ellisa. Występowała z Albertem Mangelsdorffem, Johnem Surmanem i Jean-Luc Ponty'm.

Do historii jazzu przeszły jej nagrania z saksofonistami Warnem Marshem ("I Remember You"), Dexterem Gordonem ("Blues & Ballads - Some other spring") i Archie'm Sheppem ("Hi-Fly"). U ich boku potrafiła doskonale rozwijać idiom jazzowej wokalistyki, połączony ze europejską wrażliwością. Wspólne nagrania z angielskim saksofonistą i multiinstrumentalistą Johnem Surmanem to z kolei przestrzeń do twórczych odniesień do tradycji północno-europejskiej.

Jest laureatką wielu prestiżowych nagród, w tym norweskiej Grammy. Krytycy uznają Karin Krog za jedną z najwybitniejszych wokalistek jazzowych z Europy. Od lat 60. z powodzeniem koncertuje na całym świecie. Ciekawostką jest, że polski debiut Jana Garbarka nastąpił właśnie w zespole Karin Krog na Jazz Jamboree'1966. Jej głos i możliwości interpretacyjne porównywano do Billie Holiday. Specjalizuje się w wykonaniach nastrojowych duetów i standardów. Śpiewa z charakterystycznym dla siebie wdziękiem, zmysłowym ciepłem i prawdziwym polotem.

Amerykański saksofonista Scott Hamilton od początku swojej muzycznej kariery związany jest z głównym nurtem jazzu, często porównywany jest do Bena Webstera, Colemana Hawkinsa, Zoota Simsa czy Dona Byasa. Od swojego debiutu płytowego w 1977 roku związany z wytwórnią Concord, dla której to wytwórni nagrał większość z blisko pięćdziesięciu autorskich albumów. Najsłynniejsze z nich to 'Soft Lights & Sweet Music' nagrany razem z Gerry'm Mulligan'em [1986], 'Scott Hamilton Plays Ballads' [1989], 'Scott Hamilton with Strings' [1992], nagrany z pianistą Alanem Broadbentem, który także aranżował materiał do płyty, 'After Hours' [1997],'Red Door: Remember Zoot Sims' [1998], 'Scott Hamilton meets Jesper Thilo' [2011] i 'Swedish Ballads... & More' [2013].
Jego najnowsza płyta nagrana została w skandynawskim kwartecie, z którym Hamilton nagrywa i koncertuje od kilku już lat. Zaproszenie do współpracy przyjęła wielka Karin Krog. Efekt tej sesji jest po prostu wspaniały!

Scott Hamilton i Karin Krog to wielcy mistrzowie, przynależący raczej do minionej epoki, ze wszelkimi zapomnianymi jej walorami, z drugiej, są ciągle otwarci i nadal rozwijający się. Najlepszym tego dowodem jest dobór repertuaru do ich wspólnej płyty, zawiedzie sie ten, kto szuka znanych standardów. Scott Hamilton z Karin Krog i owszem, sięgają do przebogatej skarbnicy jazzowych szlagierów, ale raczej tych niedocenianych, pomijanych przez jazzowych wyjadaczy. Płyta 'The Best Things In Life' zalicza się do środka jazzu, wokół którego narosło wiele negatywnych stereotypów (fala przesłodzonych lub konwencjonalnych nagrań zalała rynek, niezasłużenie topiąc dobre imię gatunku). Należy jednak uprzedzić tych, którzy chcieliby skreślić ją z powodu gatunkowych uprzedzeń, że tym samym ryzykują przegapienie jednej z najpiękniejszych jazzowych płyt, jakie przyniósł 2015 rok. Scott Hamilton i Karin Krog imponują znakomitą techniką, a jednocześnie nie rażą mechaniczną, pustą wirtuozerią. Saksofonista wydobywa z tych utworów cały ich potencjał kolorystyczny. Norweska wokalistka zaśpiewała jazzowe pieśni w sposób bezpretensjonalny i ujmujący prostotą. Karin Krog nie wymyśla w nich prochu, ale też nie wyważa otwartych drzwi. Dzięki temu znajduje idealny balans między melancholią a bezpretensjonalną prostotą, nie popadając przy tym w tanią ilustracyjność.

Dzięki znakomitej reżyserii dźwięku. która charakteryzuje duńską oficynę wydawniczą Stunt Records (płyty z tą nazwą charakteryzują się najwyższą troską o jakość dźwięku) otrzymujemy nagranie, w którym można się rozkochać bez reszty.

Norweska wokalistka Karin Krog wystąpiła po raz pierwszy w Polsce na Jazz Jamboree ’66, a w jej zespole grał na saksofonie 19-letni Jan Garbarek. Przez wiele lat była ambasadorką europejskiego jazzu na całym świecie. Najlepsze albumy nagrała z Dexterem Gordonem - "Some Other Spring" i Johnem Surmanem - "Cloud Line Blue" - wydano go także w Polsce. Mimo 79 lat, nadal śpiewa z klasą i poczuciem swingu, a jej głos zyskał intrygującą patynę.

Amerykański saksofonista Scott Hamilton okazał się idealnym partnerem dla jej interpretacji standardów. Spośród solistów średniego pokolenia to jemu należy się korona dawnych mistrzów saksofonu: Stana Getza, a może bardziej Colemana Hawkinsa i Lestera Younga. Ten trop prowadzi nas do Billie Holiday, której wspólny album Krog i Hamiltona miał być poświęcony.

Jednak w trakcie nagrań repertuar poszerzono o kompozycje powstałe po śmierci Billie, ale zaśpiewane w jej duchu, bez eksponowania wokalu. Jak Holiday, tak i Krog traktuje swój głos jak instrument, szczególnie kiedy improwizuje wokół linii melodycznej "Don’t Get Scared" nawiązując do oryginalnej solówki Stana Getza z końca lat 50. Sięgnęła też po balladę "I Must Have That Man" spopularyzowaną przez Billie Holiday.

Kilka tematów Hamilton gra tylko ze swoim kwartetem, w którym wyróżnia się szwedzki pianista Jan Lundgren, gość festiwalu Jazz nad Odrą 2016, gdzie wystąpił 29 kwietnia. "The Best Things In Life Are Free " - śpiewa Karin Krog, ale ten album trzeba kupić.

It is a common phenomenon to fall in love with a voice. Some even say that for a voice to have integrity in jazz, one must fall in love with it. In the ‘60s and ‘70s many people fell in love with Norwegian vocalist Karin Krog. She introduced young audiences to jazz. They suddenly realized that while Sweden had Monica Zetterlund, Norway had Karin Krog – and Denmark did its best to bring these stars to Copenhagen. Ever since, she has mesmerized crowds with her classic jazz vocals as well as her versatility. For Karin Krog is immune to genre boxes. She collaborates with the finest Scandinavian artists and with international stars in a wide range of styles (including Steve Kuhn, Archie Shepp, John Surman, Dexter Gordon, Kenny Drew and Niels-Henning Orsted Pedersen). Her phrasing and intonation are easily recognizable, and she seems to have taken Billie Holiday’s statement of “hating straight singing” to heart. Karin is naturally compelled to change a song and make it her own. Her interpretations are always deeply personal while also so obviously right.

When asked by American tenor saxophonist Scott Hamilton to take part in a tribute recording for Billie Holiday’s would-be 100th birthday, Karin was very pleased. But soon Karin and Scott broke the boundaries of the original project. Scott agrees that as long as one has a story to tell, the choice of tune is less important. Jazz isn’t always about innovation. It is equally important to keep the flame kindled, and no one does this better than Scott Hamilton. Active since the ‘70s, he has kept closer to his initial starting point – swing – than Karin Krog. His love for and knowledge of the music from the ‘30s and ‘40s and the tenor giants of the period are genuine. Emerging at a time when jazz-rock owned the scene, he didn’t follow in the wake of the modernistic masters of the day, preferring a much less trendy path. He has since matured to become the Scott Hamilton we listen to now – a musician all his own: unpretentious, with great musicality and integrity, devoid of enlarged ego, sensitive, and with a genuine joy in playing. Karin’s voice is as full of vitality as ever, and her approach to the tunes presented here is refreshing and new. And just like Scott’s playing – straight from the heart. They are a fine match and obviously agree that the music is at the center. It is a pleasure to hear these mature artists in great form in close interplay with two Swedes, pianist Jan Lundgren and bassist Hans Backenroth, and Danish drummer Kristian Leth.

On top of a repertoire of standards, this album also features a rare jazz specialty, “vocalese” – the use of recorded jazz solos as basis for a new set of lyrics. Karin tells about Don’t Get Scared, that back in the ‘50s, she started learning a vocalese version based on solos by Stan Getz and Lars Gullin with lyrics by Jon Hendricks. After a gig in Oslo, tenor saxopho- nist Lucky Thompson hung out at Karin’s home with a few friends. She played King Pleasure’s ver- sion and explained that she had a problem under- standing some of the words. Lucky sat patiently at the piano writing down the whole story. At the time, she didn’t know that he himself performed on the recording! She also told Scott that she knew a ver- sion with lyrics to a Lester Young solo from a recor- ding of Sometimes I’m Happy. He knew the version and suggested a vocalese based on Slam Stewart’s bass solo. Karin has the old 78, and with help from British sax player John Surman, they took it apart and put words to it. A dedicated Slam Stewart fan, bassist Hans Backenroth transcribed the solo and played it to the new lyrics. In her cover notes Karin comments on each tune and also observes that Scott already seems to have recorded everything from the Great American Songbook. However one tune stood out: The Best Things In Life Are Free. “I had always yearned to record it – what better opportunity than now?” THE BEST THINGS IN LIFE… A song and an album reminding us what is most important in life and what great jazz can do.
