Gdy dwa lata temu dostałem do rąk debiutancką w barwach Edition Records płytę norweskiego pianisty Eyolfa Dale'a pod tytułem "Wolf Valley" byłem zadziwiony. Napisałem wtedy "Dziewięć z pomysłem skomponowanych przez lidera, kolorowo zaaranżowanych i doskonale zagranych jazzowych kompozycji, które z pewnością wejdą do żelaznego jazzowego repertuaru. Wszystko pozostaje tu pod całkowitą kontrolą. Z jednej strony polistylistyczna struktura muzyczna, z drugiej strony dyscyplina artystyczna, przynosząca muzykę, w której słychać wielką dbałość o najmniejszy nawet detal.
To wyjątkowy przykład muzyki, o olbrzymim ładunku ekspresji, a jednocześnie relaksującej i odprężającej. Jest tutaj miejsce na zadumę i kontemplację brzmienia. Instrumentaliści, a wśród nich doskonale znani fanom jazzu perkusista Gard Nilssen (świetna płyta Gard Nilssen's Acoustic Unity dla Clean Feed) i członek kilku kapitalnych skandynawskich bandów - Trespass Trio, Trinity, Circulasione Totale Orchestra, Wibutee, Crimetime Orchestra, MZN3 - basista Per Zanussi grają tak żarliwie, że przy refleksyjnym charakterze kompozycji, efekt zadziwia niespotykanym ładunkiem ekspresji.

Oktet norweskiego pianisty wydaje się być mocno wtopiony w historię jazzu (Maria Schneider Orchestra), jednocześnie jednak jest uderzająco współczesny, śmiało można powiedzieć nowoczesny. Ich aranżacyjna inwencja czerpie z dokonań najlepszych współczesnych europejskich jazzmanów, ale nie w mniejszym stopniu z dzisiejszej praktyki muzyki ludowej, ale oczywiście także improwizowanej".

"Return to Mind" to nowy album norweskiego pianisty i kompozytora. Z sukcesem rozwija on tutaj autorską koncepcję poetyckiej i wyrazistej muzyki, osnutej jednakże w dalece niepokojącym stylu. Całość promieniuje elegancją i powściągliwością, Skład nie uległ zmianie, spotykamy tutaj kwiat norweskiego jazzowego pokolenia 30-latków, z Gardem Nilssenem, Perem Zanussim i André Rolighetenem na czele. "Return To Mind" potwierdza wysoką artystyczną klasę i reputację Eyolfa Dale'a jako charyzmatycznego lidera zespołu, twórczego kompozytora i zdolnego solistę z zamiłowaniem do ujmujących melodii i zjawiskowych interakcji, które mają moc przywoływania fascynujących muzycznych obrazów. I nie jest to lapidarna kontynuacja, lecz początek nowej, jeszcze bardziej ekscytującej narracji.

Eyolf explains the inspiration behind his music: ‘‘Music for me is a personal statement, a musical representation of my imagination. I often start with images, sometimes abstract, sometimes stemming more from reality. All of the music on this album was made in mid-2017, between touring and travelling during a very busy period. Therefore, the composition process became a method of returning to mind, to a place of inspiration, recreation and creative work with my musical ideas. In many ways, the music represents taking this vision and magnifying its intimacy to a large group of fantastic musicians.”

With the piano firmly centre stage, the music is arresting and powerfully emotive shifting pulse and time whilst weaving folk-like melodies between horns, vibes and keys.

These compositions are timeless. They stretch your imagination, pushing and pulling you with unpredictable emotions and dynamics. They are distinctly Norwegian yet expressively international. This music stems from a jazz tradition, yet is profoundly classical in its make up. Part travelogue in sound, part imaginary film soundtrack…just great music.

Return to Mind clearly demonstrates Eyolf Dale ability as a highly accomplished piano player and a skilled composer and showcases the mature lyrical introspection that we often associate with Norwegian jazz, but equally, the explorative curiosity and restless free elements that are emerging as a hallmark of the younger Nordic improvisers.
