Dálava, bo tak nazywa się ten niezwykły projekt, to efekt współpracy amerykańskiej śpiewaczki, czeskiego pochodzenia - Julii Ulehla i brooklyńskiego gitarzysty, ormiańskiego pochodzenia – Arama Bajakiana. Dodatkowo na płycie usłyszymy kwiat improwizatorów z Vancouver, czyli Peggy Lee (cello), Tyson Naylor (piano, organ, accordion), Colin Cowan (bass) i Dylan van der Schyff (drums).

Julia Ulehla, aktorka teatru eksperymentalnego, związana przez lata z Workcenter Jerzego Grotowskiego i Thomasa Richardsa, śpiewaczka z czułością sięgająca do morawskiej ludowizny znalazła w Bajakianie idealnego współpracownika. Aram Bajakian swoją debiutancką, autorską płytę wydał w Tzadik Records, ma za sobą dwie światowe trasy u boku Lou Reeda i ponad 100 koncertów z Diana Krall, podczas jej 'Glad Rag Doll Tour' w 2012 i 2013 roku. Współpracuje ponadto z Johnem Zornem, Yusefem Lateefem, gitarzystami Markiem Ribotem i Nelsem Cline'm, Jamesem Carterem, Hugh Masakelą, Jamaaladeenem Tacumą, Matem Manerim. Jest członkiem grupy Abraxas Shanira Blumenkranza, z którą dla Tzadik Records wydał dwie wspaniałe płyty: 'Book of Angels Volume 19' i 'Psychomagia'.

Mamy zatem grupę muzyków, wyposażonych w rzadko spotykane kompetencje, wśród których na plan pierwszy wysuwają się mistrzowski kunszt wykonawczy, ugruntowane wieloletnią współpracą porozumienie pomiędzy muzykami, nieposkromiona wyobraźnia i swoista artystyczna nieobliczalność, dająca tutaj bogate plony.
Słychać tu między innymi rosochatość Toma Waitsa (The rocks began to crumble), punkową dezynwolturę (He’s bringing something for me), rozdzierający smutek ludowych pieśni (War). W rękach kanadyjskich muzyków, tradycyjne morawskie tematy przestają być eksponatami muzealnymi, nikt z muzyków zgromadzonych w studio nie zajmuje się ich odkurzaniem, lecz wpuszczają do tej tradycji nowe życie, a orzeźwione zmysłowymi improwizacjami zyskują one aspekt czegoś niepowtarzalnego.
Muzyczna narracja prowadzona jest na granicy dwóch światów, świata realnego i surrealnego, dopiero z kolejną lekturą płyty jesteśmy w stanie określić, dokąd to wszystko zmierza, o czym właściwie jest ta opowieść. Niezwykła forma i klimat płyty sprawia, że trudno się od nie oderwać.
Jedna z najbardziej niezwykłych płyt tego roku!

Dálava is a unique world music/cross-genre project that reflects and a body of Moravian folk songs of the 19th and early 20th century through the fun-house mirror of 21st century creative jazz and post-rock. The principal artists are American vocalist Julia Ulehla and guitarist Aram Bajakian (Lou Reed, John Zorn), joined by their elite band of Vancouver improvisers: Peggy Lee (cello), Tyson Naylor (piano, organ, accordion), Colin Cowan (bass) and Dylan van der Schyff (drums). The song texts are akin to fairy tales or compact, elliptical parables. Dálava gives each song its own sound world. Ulehla, inspired by her years as actress and singer at the Workcenter of Jerzy Grotowski and Thomas Richards, animates these affecting melodies and archetypal storylines of love, death and the natural world through an improvisational yet ritual approach to performance. It’s a kind of musical séance; indeed, there is a generations-long personal bond at work here, as these songs were collected in his home village by Ulehla’s great grandfather, a botanist and ethnomusicologist who viewed folk songs as living organisms. So they prove to be in Dálava’s bold, powerful and tender interpretations.

The CD package comes with a 36-page booklet including the Czech texts, English translations, and Ulehla’s insightful commentary, as well as beautiful period photography of the Moravian countryside.

Ulehla and Bajakian have already created a minor sensation in the Czech Republic with their unconventional recreations of this well-loved repertoire, and are poised with this release to make a bigger splash on world music and creative jazz stages.
