"Life Carries Me This Way" to pierwszy solowy album w dorobku pianistki i kompozytorki, a od kilku lat również profesorki Berklee School od Music, Myry Melford. Urodzona w Chicago instrumentalistka, wykształcona pod kierunkiem wybitnych muzyków tradycyjnego jazzu (jej pierwszym nauczycielem gry na fortepianie był legendarny chicagowski pianista Erwin Helfer, później - Don Pullen), ale zafascynowana jazzową awangardą - muzyczne szlify zdobywała u boku Henry'ego Threadgilla, Leroya Jenkinsa oraz Josepha Jarmana, prezentuje tu muzykę inspirowaną obrazami swojego niedawno zmarłego przyjaciela, malarza-abstrakcjonisty Dona Reicha.

Ten osiadły w Sacramento artysta łączył w swych pracach fascynację dorobkiem Kandinskiego, Paula Klee czy Picassa z odważnym użyciem jaskrawej kolorystyki, niemało czerpiąc przy tym z natury i otaczającego go świata. Tworzył abstrakcyjne, surrealistyczne pejzaże, wcale nierzadko sugerując w tytułach inspiracje muzyczne, zwłaszcza orientalne. Intymne malarstwo Reicha do tego stopnia stanowiło inspirację pianistki, że zdecydowała się poświęcić pamięci przyjaciela cały album, a poszczególne kompozycje odwołują się do konkretnych malarskich dzieł skrupulatnie reprodukowanych w dołączonej do płyty książeczce.

Muzyka Myry Melford pokazuje tu całą gamę jej muzycznych fascynacji - od bluesa i tradycyjnego jazzu, przez klasyczną jak i jazzową awangardę spod znaku Ornette'a Colemana czy Andrew Hilla, po współczesną muzykę komponowaną wywiedzioną z tradycji włoskich kompozytorów dwudziestego stulecia - Luciano Berio i Luigiego Nono. A wszystko to, jakby dodatkowo, nasycone jest jeszcze odwołaniami do popularnej muzyki amerykańskiej ubiegłego stulecia. Gdzieś tu można usłyszeć pasaże jakby wyjęte z kompozycji choćby Burta Bucharacha. Tak było zresztą u Melford niejako od zawsze - czy grała w trio z Lindsey'em Hornerem i Reggim Nicholsonem, czy w kwintecie z Davem Douglasem i Martym Ehrlichem, czy Trio M z Dresserem i Blackiem - zawsze przemycała dźwięki, pasaże, tematy piękne i proste w swojej melodyjności, takie, które długo jeszcze nuci się po wybrzmieniu płyty czy koncertu. I które zawsze też, w otoczeniu dźwięków porwanych, aharmonicznych i zgrzytliwych brzmią świeżo i zaskakująco, pięknie, nie przekraczając jednak nigdy granicy melodyjnej naiwności.

Nie inaczej jest i tu - bo choćby wieńczące płytę "Still Life" pozostaje w pamięci na całe godziny i nie można się od prostej i pięknej, melodyjnej formy tego utworu uwolnić. Ta fascynacja melodyjną prostotą w niczym Melford nieogranicza - jej twórcza wolność nie zna barier czy szufladek, a muzyka zdaje się zagarniać kolejne tradycje i obszary łącząc ze sobą klasterowe improwizacje spod znaku Dona Pullena z sonorystycznymi brzmieniami współczesności, harmolodykę spod znaku Colemana z bluesem, free jazz z intymnością i kameralnością wspomnień o zmarłym przyjacielu i jego sztuce.

To płyta wprost przytłaczająca pięknem i pomysłowością poszczególnych kompozycji, unikająca sztampy i zgranych brzmień, imponująca wyrazistością, ale i ogromem zainteresowań oraz skojarzeń. Każdy utwór to dopracowana perełka tak, gdy chodzi o formę, jak i wykonanie. Jeden instrument - ale ani chwili nudy czy twórczej pustki. Jedna z najlepszych i najbardziej różnorodnych, a przy tym zamkniętych w spójną, dramaturgiczną całość płyt na fortepian jakie znam. Koniecznie!

"Life Carries Me This Way is pianist/composer Myra Melford's first solo piano recording. It features original compositions inspired by the artwork of her friend, the late Sacramento-based artist Don Reich (1931-2010). The project was entirely recorded, mixed, and mastered at Firehouse 12 Studios in New Haven, CT by owner and chief engineer Nick Lloyd. The CD package contains a 16-page booklet that includes full color photographs of Don Reich's artwork as well as notes by Melford and Charles Johnson.
Her work has earned Melford some of the highest accolades in her field. In 2013 alone, she was named a Guggenheim Fellow and received the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation's Performing Artist Award and a Doris Duke Residency to Build Demand for the Arts for her efforts to re-imagine the jazz program at San Francisco's Yerba Buena Center for the Arts. She was also the winner of the 2012 Alpert Award in the Arts for Music. She has been honored numerous times in DownBeat's Critics Poll since 1991 and was nominated by the Jazz Journalists Association as Pianist of the Year in 2008 and 2009 and Composer of the Year in 2004."-Firehouse 12

Pianist Myra Melford's first solo disc, Life Carries Me This Way, is a musical exploration the paintings of California visual artist Don Reich. Rendering a painting—an art form that can be taken in at once, with one look—and addressing its moods, colors, shapes and textures over the course of a composition is not a easy task. Though in jazz, it's certainly not unheard of. The connection between abstract art and the improvisation-based music goes back at least to pianist Dave Brubeck's Time Out (Columbia Records, 1959), with its distinctive abstract cover art by painter Neil Fujita.
Recording and entire album based on the paintings of a single artist is also not unique. Soprano saxophonist Jane Ira Bloom released, in 2004, her excellent tribute to Jackson Pollack, Chasing Paint (Arabesque Records); and drummer Matt Jorgensen offered up his finest recording to date with Tattooed By Passion (Origin Records, 2010), a nod to the paintings of Dale Chisman.
The album comes with a booklet that includes the paintings that inspired Melford's piano work. Reich had energy and flare in the rendering of his abstract still lifes, bold landscapes, and even some near cartoons. Inspiring visuals that Melford turned into music filled with a supremely confident spontaneity, from the turbulent angularity of "Park Mechanics" through the subdued ruminations of "Red Beach," to playful bursts and percussive ponderings on "Piano Music."
Melford is a rare original voice here—as she proved herself as well on her superb 2010 Trio M Recording (with bassist mark Dresser and drummer Matt Wilson) Guest House (Enja/Yellowbird Records). If she is unfettered, brimming with the unexpected in the trio format, she takes those strengths further playing solo. She is an artist who can probably be tagged a "Free Player," but she is also one who does not eschew beauty, of the unexpected kind, the type that sneaks up on you and jumps out from around the corner.
"Attic" the painting, is a beautiful, geometric, muted- color pastel; "Attic," the Myra Melford composition is a clipped, densely-layered, geometric examination of the mysteries inside the angles and shadows. "Barcelona," the painting, vertical mish-mash of long, compressed shapes (surreal buildings and street and alleys, perhaps), with a bit of blue sky peaking out from above. "Barcelona," the piano work explores those streets with a sense of discovery and wonder.
Life Carries Me this Way is an oddly gorgeous and uncompromising music. Myra Melford does solo piano with the best of them.
