Editor's info:
Our main LP here, originally titled Bernstein Plays Brubeck Plays Bernstein, is a mixture of jazz and classical music. Celebrated composer and conductor Leonard Bernstein (1918-1990) not only conducted the New York Philharmonic for years, performing the most varied classics, but also composed the music for numerous Broadway shows. Both facets are covered on this album, on which he joins forces with the Dave Brubeck Quartet. Mostly a jazz musician, Brubeck also spent his career exploring new musical trends expanding jazz into unusual meters and rhythms, and combining the jazz spirit with that of foreign music (hence his "Jazz Impressions" series, including Jazz Impressions of Eurasia, Jazz Impressions of Japan -included here as a bonus album-, etc). He also made LPs combining jazz with the classical "variation" form (closely related to jazz improvisation), like the albums recorded with clarinettist Bill Smith in the early 1960s, or Brubeck's two-piano jazz ballet "Points of Jazz", recorded by the piano duet of Arthur Gold and Robert Fizdale in 1960.

The original album Brubeck Plays Bernstein (Columbia CS8257), appearing here complete on a single CD for the first time ever. On the first half the Dave Brubeck Quartet performs a fourpart composition by Dave's older brother Howard, accompanied by the New York Philharmonic conducted by Leonard Bernstein. On the second half, the quartet offers its interpretations of five tunes from Bernstein's Broadway musicals West Side Story and Wonderful Town. As a bonus, another album by the Dave Brubeck Quartet: Jazz Impressions of Japan (Columbia CS9012), which also appears here in its entirety.
Includes 16-page booklet

****All Music Guide:
Brubeck Plays Bernstein
"For this historic LP, the Dave Brubeck Quartet met
with The New York Philharmonic under the direction
of Leonard Bernstein for a program subtitled Bernstein
Plays Brubeck Plays Bernstein. This is one of the
more successful 'Jazz Meets the Symphony' ventures
and deserves to be reissued on CD." (Scott Yanow)

****All Music Guide:
Jazz Impressions of Japan
"Thirteen years into their tenure, the Dave Brubeck
Quartet was still able to mine the creative vein for
new means of expression. These eight tracks, all
based on a tour of Japan the year before, were, in
a sense, Brubeck fulfilling a dictum from his teacher,
the French composer Darius Milhaud, who exhorted
him to 'travel the world and keep your ears open'.
It's truly wonderful." (Thom Jurek)
