Perkusista Olavi Louhivuori w rodzinnej Finlandii trzykrotnie zwyciężył konkurs Young Nordic jazz Groups (w 2000 r. z Joona Toivanen Trio, w 2002 r. z Ilmiliekki Quartet, w 2006 z Sun Trio), co otworzyło mu drogę do wielu występów światowych.
Współpracował z artystami o międzynarodowej sławie, jak Anthony Braxton, Marilyn Crispell, Mats Eilertsen, UMO Jazz Orchestra oraz z wokalistką Susanne Abbuehl. Louhivuori jest także członkiem kwartetu Tomasza Stańki.
Gruntownie wykształcony muzyk jest jednym z najbardziej znanych na świecie fińskich jazzmanów (Olavi rozpoczął naukę gry na skrzypcach w wieku czterech lat, ale w wieku lat ośmiu zamienił skrzypce na wiolonczelę i fortepian. Jako dziewięciolatek - przyjęty do klasy muzycznej w szkole podstawowej - zaczął grać na bębnach, nauka w Fińskim Konserwatorium Muzycznym w Jyväskylä, studia na prestiżowej Akademii Sibeliusa w Helsinkach).

Oddarrang to powołany przez niego kwintet złożony z puzonu, wiolonczeli, gitary, kontrabasu i perkusji (do tego oczywiście live electronic). Oryginalne kompozycje Louhivuoriego podążają ścieżką muzyczno-duchowego mistycyzmu, twórcza synteza mistycznej psychodelii spod znaku Sigur Rós czy Godspeed You ! Black Emperor i progresywnego jazzu, znakomici instrumentaliści programowo poruszający się na gatunkowych rubieżach, wszystko to powoduje, że o ich muzyce głośno nie tylko w Europie.

"In Cinema" to trzecia płyta zespołu, debiutancki album zespołu, „Music Illustrated", otrzymał nagrodę Jazz Emma (fiński odpowiednik Grammy) za najlepszy album jazzowy roku 2006.

Ścieżka muzyczno-duchowego mistycyzmu. Tak można określić najnowsze wydawnictwo Finów, jeżeli chcielibyśmy to przedstawić za pomocą jednego zdania. Jedni upatrują w nim porównań do islandzkich magów z obozu Sigur Rós ("Journey") i ja również byłbym ku temu skłonny, ale zaznaczając fakt, że kompozycje parafrazowane są w wymiarze czysto emocjonalnym, bowiem Oddarang poruszają zmysły nie tylko w formie post, tudzież art rocka, ale zahaczają aranżacyjnie o krainę eksperymentalnego jazzu, za dowód czego może posłużyć "Cultivate & Contemplate".

Wyważony balans rodzi niebywale nastrój nostalgicznej aury, która zawsze jednak niesie ze sobą pozytywną nutę nadziei.
Utwory nie są może silnie rozimprowizowane, a sam aranż skupiony jest raczej na budowaniu klimatu napięcia i natężenia poszczególnych środków przekazu niźli wyszukanej formy technicznej. Ewolucja każdego z utworów upojona jest przestrzenną architekturą harmonii, której każdy z dźwięków wydaje się być kluczem do odpowiedniego potęgowania impresji pompatyczności, jak to jest najbardziej zauważalne w przypadku Missing Tapes from a Highway Set i w finale Journey. Często więc podświadomie możemy doświadczyć poczucia wyjątkowego majestatu, głównie dzięki ciężarnemu tonażowi instrumentów dętych i smyczkowych, które nadają kompozycjom odpowiedniego patosu, nie będąc jednocześnie skonstruowanymi w poczuciu nadmiaru. W introdukcji Cultivate & Contemplate, w której zdają się pełnić główną rolę, początkowe frazy z tłem nabieranego powietrza do płuc, czujemy ile emocji wkładają muzycy w swoje kompozycje, z których bije niewyobrażalna szczerość przekazu. Wyważony balans rodzi niebywale nastrój nostalgicznej aury, która zawsze jednak niesie ze sobą pozytywną nutę nadziei (Self-Portrait).

To istny soundtrack i na tyle uniwersalnie zaangażowany emocjonalnie, że każdy odnajdzie w nim zwoje własne odbicie ludzkiego sentymentalizmu.
Przekaz subiektywny, stricte instrumentalny, ale klarowny w swym przekazie. Brzmienie zaskakuje swym rozmachem oraz selektywnie idealnym połączeniem charakteru instrumentów, czego uświadczymy w jednym z najbardziej rozbudowanych utworów, czteroczęściowej suicie Missing Tapes from a Highway Set czy napawającym energią The Sage i pulsacyjnie rozbrzmiewającym Journey z fenomenalną zmianą atmosfery. Nastrój wydaje się być mroźny, ale w tej misternie wypracowanej otoczce tajemnicy helsińskiej produkcji czujemy ciepło dotykające raczej pozytywnych aspektów otaczającej rzeczywistości. Gęsta i rytmicznie prowadzona perkusja (Self-Portait), dająca upust swojej przestrzennej wizji gitara (The Sage), subtelność klawiszy (Quiet Steps) czy nieodparte zaangażowanie głębi puzonu oraz eterycznej wiolonczeli (Introducing) to jedne z wielu atutów tego albumu, którego magii nie sposób się oprzeć.

Muzyka przepełniona melancholią, ale ze świetnie zaaranżowanym warsztatem technicznym muzyków, dających pewność zatopienia się w muzyce nieszablonowej. To istny soundtrack i na tyle uniwersalnie zaangażowany emocjonalnie, że każdy odnajdzie w nim zwoje własne odbicie ludzkiego sentymentalizmu.

The third album from this Finnish, drummer led quintet is something of a departure from its predecessors, not in its participants, its ethos nor its strong visual imagery, but in the balance between the components. With only occasional use of powerful rhythm, both earlier albums bore a sparse and principally acoustic feel on the long, even rambling, instrumental pieces.

The development of guitarist Lasse Sakara's taste in electronics may help explain the current change, although the credits are again all (but one) ascribed to the leader Olavi Louhivuori , whose musicality obviously extends beyond his drumkit. As before, in the final mix his band members have a far more prominent role than he does, making for luscious harmonies between cello, trombone and synth. The feeling is again predominantly sparse, but the colours are more treated than before. However when the vista and volume open up, as on many tracks they do, it feels more than expansive.

Indeed the overall lugubriousness and echoing lead lines sound distinctly progey in places, pushing the limits of ethno-jazz into which category the band normally have been squeezed. Comparisons with Sigur Ros as well as Ennio Morricone have been made with justification too but, as the live reviews suggest, this band have a flexbility that makes the album content broader than might be expected.

Lacking any liner notes, the inspiration for the tracks remains opaque but one can assume certain cinematographic sources. The Finnish roots suggest bare polar landscapes, and names such as "Cultivate and Contemplate" confirm the introspective mode. This and the following "Journey" both come in at over 11 minutes so, like its predecessors, it is an album to be savoured before swallowing.

Finnish five-piece Oddarrang make the kind of music jazz purists generally love to hate, but which may well open doors into new and adventurous forms for intrepid listeners who sometimes feel that jazz is an elite club. Signed to Dave Stapleton’s excellent Edition label, the band may inevitably be marketed to a dedicated jazz audience, but there is certainly a sense of both a band and a label attempting to break out of a niche here.

The group have already been readily compared with the much missed Esbjorn Svensson, and they make similar use of atmospherics, textures and colours. Even so, Svensson stuck to the relatively conventional trio format, and that group’s second album collected interpretations of Thelonious Monk tunes. There’s a sense that Oddarrang are doing something rather different, and this album’s title rather gives the game away. Four of these pieces were composed for films – and the whole album has a strong visual sense, as well as clear intimations of mood, time and place.

With Osmo Ikonen’s versatile cello and Ilmari Pohjola’s lyrical trombone both wistful, melancholy and affecting presences, there’s much here for admirers of the work of Ólafur Arnalds or Sigur Rós. Self Portrait veers from a glacial chamber intimacy into something bombastic – more closely resembling Arcade Fire’s Wake Up than any of the band’s ECM Scandinavian jazz peers. What the group take from these artists (a certain stateliness and mournfulness, rock-tinged arpeggiated and strummed guitar parts, rolling and insistent drumming, the gritty, plectrum-driven bass sound that initiates The Sage) they couple with the articulation, expression and dynamic control of jazz musicians. What distinguishes them from arena-chasing post-rock or indie bands is the strong sense of narrative and adventure within the music, and a close attention to detail, particularly with regard to timbre and sound.

Yet this music studiously and perhaps self-consciously avoids many of the tropes of contemporary jazz. There is improvisation here, but it’s carefully entwined with the compositions and strictly serves the construction of an overall mood or feeling and the common approach is of crafting simple, direct, memorable melodies. There’s a real sense of economy and discipline here. There is little in the way of rhythmic playfulness or experimentation, and the studied complexity of much modern jazz composing is largely rejected.

Much of this expansive music develops gracefully and patiently over lengthy running times. Missing Tapes From A Highway Set draws from the more contemplative side of Godspeed You! Black Emperor or A Silver Mt Zion but also has a distinctive voice of its own, possibly informed by folk traditions. Whilst the piece builds into something bolder, with its snare drum rolls and strafing guitar, it resists the more manipulative aspirations of rock dynamics. It’s accessible for sure, but not exactly conventional.

Throughout, the band certainly achieve a satisfying unity and blend – merging not just a range of influences and approaches, but also creating a symbiosis between acoustic instrumentation, synths and sampled sounds. It is, however, so carefully planned and integrated that it occasionally feels a little bloodless, and certainly resolutely one-paced. It would be great to hear this undoubtedly confident and authoritative band also attempt something with a little more urgency.
