Niewiele jest kameralnych jazzowych składów z podwojonym basem, warto tu przywołać dwa "Sound Grammar" Ornette'a Colemana i "No Photograph Available" Dennis González Boston Project.

Kwintet prowadzony przez norweskiego basistę Jona Rune Stroma (rocznik 1985), muzyka z samego serca sceny improwizowanej, członka Paal Nilssen-Love's Large Unit, Mats Gustafsson's Nu Ensemble, SAKA Trio, Universal Indians, All Included i Friends & Neighbors, współpracownika Matsa Äleklinta, Johna Dikemana, Martina Küchena, Thomasa Johanssona czy Tollefa Ostvanga realizuje właśnie koncepcję na taką obsadę instrumentalną. I trzeba przyznać, że płyta "Fragments" robi piorunujące wrażenie!
Piątka muzyków po mistrzowsku łączy dwie wydawałoby się skrajne tradycje - otwartość free jazzu opartą na wolności improwizacji z niezwykłą komunikatywnością i prostotą przekazu. Choć już od czasu Sun Ra Arkestra, Alberta Aylera, Dona Cherry'ego czy współcześnie Martina Kuchena wiemy, że te dwa światy potrafią pięknie się spotykać.

Sześć kompozycji lidera układa się we frapującą, dźwiękową podróż przez meandry połamanych rytmów i przestrzennych harmonii, beztrosko wolnych od tradycyjnego ciążenia. Każdy z piątki muzyków swoim potencjałem może rozsadzić dowolny skład, w bardzo swobodny sposób naginają granice gatunkowe, by dać upust swojej instrumentalnej finezji. Oczywiście Jon Rune Strom trzyma rękę na pulsie, wkracza, gdy trzeba, choć taka potrzeba nie występuje często.

Pięknie napędzają się dmuchacze, trębacz Thomas Johansson i André Roligheten, wielokrotnie już o nich pisaliśmy na łamach multikulti.com, Jon Rune Strom z Christianem Meaasem Svendsenem tworzą misterną strukturę niskotonowych współbrzmień, a Andreas Wildhagen, wprowadzający czasem marszowe werble robi po prostu mistrzowską robotę. Posłuchajcie "Blood", by dotknąć prawdziwej jazzowej magii...

Yes, you can create a band concept from the double bass position, but instead of putting himself as the focus of the collective music of his quintet, bassist and composer Jon Rune Strom enlisted a second bass player, Christian Meaas Svendsen, for the group, like him doubling the upright instrument with an electric one. Which means that the idea is on the sound, not the personality. And the choice of companion explains much of what we find in “Fragments”. If Strom is known for his incredible energy and physicality, Svendsen is a force of nature, sometimes using two or three bows or performing with arms, legs, feet and mouth. The center of gravity of the music is low, but the two horns manage to take it to the highest levels possible, namely trumpeter Thomas Johansson and tenor saxophonist André Roligheten, with drummer Andreas Wildhagen gluing it all and covering the fortuitous gaps like an octopus. That’s what differenciates the Jon Rune Strom Quintet from all the other bands including Strom’s contribution, namely Friends & Neighbors, All Included, Universal Indians and Frode Gjerstad Trio. The project belongs to the same family tree, call it free music or free jazz as you wish, but there’s something else going on. Bass-driven pleasure in its purist form, that is.
