Tworzą go obecnie angielski saksofonista Iain Ballamy, norweski perkusista Thomas Stronen, Nils Petter Molvaer, który zastapił Arve Henriksena i Christian Fennesz w miejsce basisty Matsa Eilertsena. Patrząc na skład można było oczekiwać nowego podejścia do muzyki, w końcu Christian Fennesz ma ustaloną markę w świecie nowej muzyki, z drugiej strony Nils Petter Molvaer to jedna z współczesnych twarzy norweskiego jazzu ...
'Quiet Inlet' nie odkrywa jednak nowych lądów, mam wrażenie, że nowy wydawca ma pomóc odnieść światowy sukces, zespołowi, który z pewnością na to zasługuje, dla tych, którzy zetkną się z muzyką Food po raz pierwszy będzie to wspaniałe doświadczenie, dla tych, którzy znają wcześniejsze dokonania formacji pozycja dobra choć nie priorytetowa.
Bardzo atmosferyczny, skupiony na pojedynczych dźwiękach filgranowy jazz nadal magnetyzuje słuchacza, muzyczna narracja oparta jest na dwóch fundamentach, improwizacjach Ballamy'ego, który ma za sobą współpracę z tuzami brytyjskiej sceny muzycznej, jak Bill Bruford, Ian Shaw i Billy Jenkins. Drugim fundamentem jest oszczędna perkusja Thomasa Stronena.

Food has defined a new kind of lyrical electro-acoustic improvisation in the course of its twelve year existence. Founded as a quartet in 1998, since 2006 the group has been a core duo of UK saxophonist Iain Ballamy and Norwegian drummer Thomas Stronen joined by guests for diverse projects. At the Molde Jazz Festival and the Oslo Bla club in 2007/8 their guests were trumpeter Nils Petter Molvaer, well known to ECM followers, and Austrian improvising guitarist Christian Fennesz, making his label debut. The resultant music, with melodic improvising, trancelike pulses, and shifting clouds of sound is highly attractive.

British saxophonist Iain Ballamy has had a quite remarkable and visionary approach to music that he stuck to for many years. Apart from being a busy sideman in the fusion bands of Bill Bruford, or the more mainstream and modern jazz outfits with Ian Shaw and Billy Jenkins, his own band "Food" that he co-founded with Norwegian drummer and electronics wizzard Thomas Stronen, has been at the forefront of nujazz, combining instruments and harmonic subtlety of jazz with rock beats, electronics and processing.

"Quiet Inlet" is their first on ECM, and is somewhat better than their previous "Molecular Gastronomy". On this album, Nils Petter Molvaer plays trumpet, replacing Arve Henriksen who was the trumpeter since the beginning, and Austrian guitarist Christian Fennesz, well-known in the world of electronic music. Remarkably, on this album Molvaer and Fennesz don't meet each other, with the former playing on four tracks and the latter on the three other tracks.

The music is as you can expect, with beautiful improvised sax and trumpet lines, full of melancholy, soaring high over a backdrop of electronic waves and alternating subtle and pumping rhythms. It does fit within the ECM catalogue because of its romantic expansiveness and the required pure quality of the recording.

My only regret is for the great art work and boxes of the former Feral releases.
