A complete never before released concert by the classic Dave Brubeck Quartet with Paul Desmond, Gene Wright and Joe Morello. It was recorded at the zenith of the group's career, right before the making of the albums Gone With the Wind and Time Out (the latter LP was one of the best-selling jazz albums of all time). Among the highlights of the Portland performance, is the only existing version of "When the Saints Go Marching In" by the Desmond-Brubeck-Wright-Morello Quartet.

By 1959, the Dave Brubeck Quartet with Paul Desmond had been in existence for nearly a decade and its popularity was high among jazz audiences (the bass player and the drummer changed a few times until Joe Morello arrived in 1956 and Eugene Wright joined the group in 1958/59). They had began playing in colleges, and slowly made their way into concert halls and jazz festivals. Brubeck was featured on the cover of Time magazine in 1954. Not even the musicians themselves had any idea that their album Time Out, recorded in June and July 1959, would become such a huge success. In the mid and late fifties, the Dave Brubeck Quartet had issued many popular albums, including Brubeck Time, Jazz Red Hot and Cool, Jazz Impressions of the USA, Jazz Goes to Junior College, Newport '58 (the group had become a regular feature at the Newport Jazz Festival, and at the 1958 edition they played a homage to the music of Duke Ellington), and Jazz Impressions of Eurasia. On April 22-23, 1959, just before taping Time Out, the Quartet recorded the album Gone with the Wind, which received a 5-star rating in Down Beat. The present concert in Portland, Oregon, was recorded on an unknown date in April 1959. It was made either just before or just after the making of Gone with the Wind and merely a couple of months prior to the making of Time Out, with the Quartet at the highest point of its long run.
