Pablo Ziegler is the most important artist of the Tango Nuevo and Astor Piazzolla's legitimate successor. He already played in several jazz ensembles when he was only 14 years old. In his younger days he composed for musicals, TV and movies and founded his first Trio, which combined classical music with jazz. Between 1978 and 1989 he worked continously with Astor Piazzolla and contributed substantially to his enormous success.
When Piazzolla became seriuosly ill, Pablo Ziegler formed the Quintett for New Tango, which was celebrated by the press and the audience. Recordings and concerts followed, together with (among others) Milva, Gary Burton and the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, London. He received awards for his achievements as composer in New Orleans, New York and Buenos Aires.

Quique Sinesi's music originates from the rich inheritance of the South American continent, from the traditional rhythmic candombés of the Argentinian inhabitants, from the melodic elements of tango, the mIlonga and the music of the European immigrants. The dances as well as the traditional folk rhythms are interpreted with new concepts, jazz on the other hand joins together with these elements, and the result is an immense lively and sparkling symbiosis.
Quique began his musical career, as the guitarist of the bandonionist Dino Saluzzi, and as member of the new Tango Quartet with Pablo Ziegler. Famous jazz stars like Jim Hall were impressed by his technique, the expression and the compositions of this exceptional guitarist. Quique played (among others) for example together with Charlie Mariano, Markus Stockhausen, Erling Kroner and Marcelo Moguilevsky.
He was invited by Jim Hall to be guest musician at the presentation of the Jazzpar Prize (the most important prize in jazz ) in Copenhagen. Since this time he could show his abbilities with his own compositions on several international concerts and festivals and could prove his emotional deepness and the perfectly control of his instrument.

Walter Castro started studying bandoneon with professor Domingo Mattio, later he continued with professors Julio Pane and Nestor Marconi. In 1985 he created The Sexteto Menor later known as "Sexteto Sur". At the beginning of 1990 he played in Osvaldo Pugliese´s Orchestra and participated in the Orchestra of Horacio Salgan in a Show called "Images" in the Plaza Center (Complejo La Plaza). He started extensive touring through the interior of Argentina and abroad. In 1993 Walter wins the contest for Bandoneon Professor and Group practices assistant at the famous "Popular Music School of Avellaneda". He played in music shows with Atilio Stampone, Osvaldo Berlingieri, Virginia Luque, Raúl Lavié, etc. In 1995 he participates in the quintet for singer Adriana Varela. In the same year he joins "Pablo Ziegler´s Quintet for New Tango".
The same year he forms part of the quintet "5/4" (cinco cuartos) and with this group he records a CD with singers from Brazil. In 1998 he records with Pablo Ziegler and The Orpheus Chamber Orchestra a CD called "Tango Romance" with BMG/RCAVICTOR New York. In 1999 he records another CD called "Pablo Ziegler Quintet for New Tango" for the same record label. He also has made several recordings with multiple performers and in October of the same year Melopea edited a CD of the instrumental group formed in 1996 with three musicians. This group is called "Presencia Tanguera" with members Angel Bonura, Hernán Posseti and Germán Martinez. Walter Castro plays a dynamic and vivid bandoneon style, as well as he gives expression of sorrow and melancholy for what tango is so well-known for.


Buenos Aires Report is the first album for Saphrane. It was recorded live in the Bimhuis in Amsterdam in spring 2006 by Art Sound, the 'home studio' for the label. Four out of the nine tracks are new compositions by Pablo Ziegler, one is new by Quique Sinesi. The artist had an especially good evening and as a result there is this remarkable recording.

In a blindfold test, one could certainly be forgiven for identifying the music on (2) as an Astor Piazzolla recording. This isn't entirely surprising given that Ziegler was a longtime pianist and collaborator in Piazzolla's seminal group and here he fields a very similar ensemble, recorded live in concert. This influence is not a one-way street however as Ziegler is widely credited with helping to shape Piazzolla's style. The opening track is a case in point: though conceived as a tribute to Weather Report, it is really much more akin to Piazzolla's work with its driving Tango-derived ostinati and crunchy Stravinskian dissonances, but it's nonetheless effective for that. In "Pájaro Ángel," Ziegler moves a bit further afield from his mentor's sound world with a pretty Classical-Jazz waltz confection-a little bit of Chopin meets Bill Evans. This latter piece effectively also showcases Sinesi's guitar playing and he contributes good work here and throughout the CD, as does Walter Castro on bandoneon. Ziegler's energetic playing is uniformly interesting as is his improvisational language which sounds impressively consistent with his writing. On this CD, as with his work in Piazzolla's group, his Classical training and influence is at least as strong as the Jazz and Argentinian threads of his style though all three elements are generally present at any given time. Check out the delightful "Milonga Para Hermeto" for a good example of a piece where these influences are about equally balanced and put to the service of a composition that manages to be both quirky and lyrical. Ziegler's writing here, as on the remaining pieces, is enjoyable and
readily accessible despite the rhythmic and harmonic complexity that is a hallmark of his work. The band performs the closing piece, Piazzolla's "Libertango," the only non-original, with an urgency and a sense of
musical conviction that more than earns the enthusiastic audience reaction heard at the track's conclusion. I was pretty enthusiastic about it too, as well as the rest of the music on the album as a whole. Ziegler is certainly doing his part to keep Piazzolla's flame alive, but just as vital to the artistic success of this CD are the directions explored that are purely Ziegler's own. This is one of the better CDs I've reviewed this year and I heartily recommend it.

Zwartkijkers die stellen dat de tango ten prooi is gevallen aan nostalgie en commercie, dienen zich onmiddellijk naar de cd-handel te spoeden waar al enige maanden een dosis tegengif verkrijgbaar is. Het betreft een concertregistratie voor het nieuwe label Saphrane Records, in april 2006 gemaakt in het Bimhuis in Amsterdam, waar een gedenkwaardig optreden plaatsvond van de Argentijnse pianist Pablo Ziegler met zijn vaste compagnons Quique Sinesi op gitaar en Walter Castro op bandoneon.
Voor Piazzolla-liefhebbers is Ziegler zeker geen onbekende. Tussen 1978 en '89 maakte hij deel uit van Piazzolla's quintet en speelde hij een uiterst actieve rol in het rijpingsproces van de tango nuevo. Ziegler, goed thuis in jazz, stelde hem in staat de grenzen van de tango flink op te rekken. Toen Piazzolla om gezondheidsredenen stopte met spelen, vervolgde Ziegler zijn eigen artistieke weg. Dat leverde hem in 2005 een Latin Grammy op voor zijn album Bajo Cero.
Deze cd bewijst dat Ziegler c.s. er weer in slagen zich los te zingen van het Piazzolla-stramien. Zieglers improvisatiekaders bieden volop vrijheid, combineren stadse hectiek met landelijke lyriek. Een feest om naar te luisteren. (Saskia Törnqvist)

Almost every musician who had dealings with Astor Piazzolla has gone on to become something of a tango star. Pianist Pablo Ziegler, a member of Piazzolla's quintet between 1978 and 1989 has done better than most. In November 2005 he won a Latin Grammy for best tango album with Bajo Cero, recorded with guitarist Quique Sinesi and esteemed bandoneon virtuoso Walter Castro. On Buenos Aires Report -a nod to Joe Zawinul- the trio hook up again. Eight of the nine compositions are by Ziegler and Sinesi and only the final track, 'Libertango', is a Piazzolla number. Nonetheless, after the opening title track -which tests the astringent, plaintive strains of tango against Zawinul-style phrasing- the album finds its own voices and moods by exploring all kinds of musical corners, from jazz and jazz-rock to folklore, milonga and minimalism.

Nog een release van Argentijnen in het buitenland, met deze nieuwe cd van Pablo Ziegler, pianist van wijlen Astor Piazzolla, en als dusdanig één van de mede-architecten van de nuevo tango, tango om naar te luisteren, niet om op te dansen. Ziegler speelt al enige jaren samen met Quique Sinesi, een andere veteraan van de Argentijnse muziek, en de jonge bandoneonheld Walter Castro. Met hun vorige cd 'Bajo Cero' kaapten ze een Latin Grammy weg voor Best Tango Album 2005. Deze nieuwe cd is live opgenomen in het Bimhuis in Amsterdam. Er staan 9 composities op, waaronder 5 nieuwe van Ziegler's hand, en natuurlijk het onvermijdelijke 'Libertango' van Piazzolla. Deze triovorm werkt heel goed en geeft de muziek een zeer intiem karakter, iets wat bij Piazzolla soms verloren ging, zeker in de live-uitvoering met grotere groep. Ze slagen erin om tango op elegante wijze te koppelen aan jazz en daarmee maken deze opnames meteen ook duidelijk hoe groot de invloed van Ziegler moet zijn geweest op de meester, want het zijn in grote mate zijn jazz stylings die hier het verschil maken met traditionele vormen van de tango.

Saphrane is een nieuw Nederlands label op het grensvlak van wereldmuziek, klassiek en jazz. Deze eerste uitgave is daar meteen een goed voorbeeld van. Pianist Pablo Ziegler werkte in de jaren tachtig meer dan tien jaar samen met Astor Piazzolla en gaf mede vorm aan diens 'nuevo tango'. Op deze vorig jaar in het Bimhuis opgenomen cd speelt Ziegler met gitarist Quique Sinesi en bandoneónist Walter Castro. Dit trio won in 2005 al een 'latin Grammy'. De titel Buenos Aires Report verwijst naar de samentrekking van tango en jazz: een ode aan Joe Zawinuls Weather Report. Verderop volgen nog combinaties met blues en klassiek. De nieuwe tango van dit trio is uiterst subtiel en soms te ingetogen. Maar met een ophitsend Places klinkt al een voorproefje voor een vurige uitvoering van Piazzolla's Libertango aan het slot. (ip)

Eerst waren ze een duo met gast. Inmiddels lijkt bandoneonist Castro er vast bij te horen. Met hun vorige album Bajo Cero sleepten ze in 2005 de Latin Grammy voor beste tangoplaat in de wacht. Deze live-opname uit het Bimhuis doet er niet voor onder. Fijnzinnig en geraffineerd

...Saphrane is een nieuw Nederlands label voor wereldmuziek , jazz, klassiek en alles wat daar tussen zit. Een label dat een fris live-gevoel moet uitstralen, een label dat volgens de makers niet onder moet doen voor ECM en Winter & Winter. Hoogdravende taal dus, maar de eerste worp de cd Buenos Aires Report (Music & Words) is wel direct een schot in de roos.
Al kun je er tegenin brengen dat men zich aan het uitvoerende duo Pablo Ziegler en Quique Sinesi geen buil kan vallen. Twee Argentijnen van zeldzame klasse, die al jaren samenspelen. De eerste was vele jaren pianist bij Astor Piazzolla, de tweede speelde jarenlang bij dat andere Argentijnse bandoneonfenomeen: Dino Saluzzi. De cd betreft een opname van een concert dat de heren vorig jaar gaven in het Amsterdamse Bimhuis met als speciale gast de bandoneonspeler Walter Castro. Ook al iemand die al vele jaren muzikaal optrekt met Ziegler en Sinesi. De mannen hebben ook samen diverse cd's gemaakt. Het resultaat is van zeldzame schoonheid. Een voorbeeld van hoe men muzikaal verder kan met Piazzolla's Tango Nuevo. Hoe deze muziek zich leent voor improvisatie. Een muzikaal avontuurlijk feest....

Na een korte intro met wat donkere pianonoten losjes met de linkerhand bij elkaar gesprokkeld, hierbij aansluitend sober percussiegetokkel en korte stroomstootjes gegenereerd met de accordeon hebben de protagonisten van dit spektakel hun plaats ingenomen en kan de voorstelling beginnen. Meteen schakelt de pianist over op de rechterhand, tovert de accordeonist vloeiende melodielijnen uit zijn instrument, voegt de gitarist er zijn commentaar bij en wordt het verhaal zo op gang getrokken. Het decor: de schemerzone tussen jazz en nuevo tango. En zo komen we natuurlijk bij Astor Piazzolla terecht. Niet verwonderlijk natuurlijk want Ziegler maakte sinds 1978 deel uit van de tangomeester zijn kwintet. Zieglers invloed op diens werk is niet te onderschatten. Je kunt stellen dat ze samen de geloofsbrieven opstelden van een nieuw genre. Bijna dertig jaar later bewijst de pianist dat hij nog steeds niets van zijn kunnen verleerd heeft, en dat in gezelschap van gitarist Quique Sinesi en bandoneonvirtuoos Walter Castro. Ziegler en Sinesi zijn oude bekenden en sleepten in 2005 met hun Bajo Cero nog een Grammy in de wacht. Ook Castro was hierbij betrokken. En zo komen we terug bij de bespreking van deze live cd opgenomen in het Amsterdamse Bimhuis. Negen nummers waaronder vijf gloednieuwe composities van Ziegler. Expressieve ingetogenheid wordt op meesterlijke wijze gekoppeld aan extreme sensibiliteit met als climax een meer dan elf minuten lange versie van Piazzolla's klassieker Libertango. Daarnaast brengt het trio nog een ode aan de Braziliaanse componist Hermeto Pascoal, laten de heren tango en blues samensmelten en accentueren ze de poëtische kant van de milonga. (GTB)

Verraderlijk spel met de tango
De liefde is een ingewikkelde zaak in de tango. Bij Pablo Ziegler en vrienden is het dan ook niet meteen liefde op het eerste gehoor. Juist omdat het innige samenspel tussen piano, gitaar en bandoneon wat al te harmonieus lijkt te verlopen
Tot het moment waarop je Buenos Aires Report een tweede maal beluistert en ontdekt dat deze drie meesterlijke muzikanten een subtiel maar verraderlijk spel spelen met de tango. De voor de tango kenmerkende contrasten worden hier eens niet uitvergroot maar genomen als een vanzelfsprekende basis waarop het echte meesterschap zich kan profileren.
Luister naar de adembenemende uitvoering van het overbekende Libertango en je hoort dat hier grootmeesters van de Tango Nuevo bezig zijn. Piazzolla is hier bij wijze van spreken nog slechts de aanleiding.
Tango voor de fijnproever in een spannende symbiose van Argentijnse traditie, jazz en klassieke muziek. En dat ook nog eens live vanuit 'ons' Bimhuis.
