Scott Hamilton jest weteranem mainstreamowego jazzu. Dość szybko zafascynował się stylistyką np. Bena Webstera i Lestera Younga. Publiczność przeświadczona, że styl ten odszedł już w zapomnienie, zaś wykonawcy przeszli do lamusa, przyjęła młodego ‘websterowskiego’ saksofonistę entuzjastycznie. Scott Hamilton pracował głównie w Nowym Jorku. Większość swych płyt i koncertów Scott Hamilton nagrał pod własnym nazwiskiem, pojawiał się jednak także jako sideman w zespołach Benny’ego Goodmana, Woody’ego Hermana, Warrena Vache, Johna Buncha i Billa Berry’ego. Brał udział (obok trębacza Ruby’ego Braffa) w czasie nagrania słynnego albumu „A First”, nagrał z Charliem Byrdem „It’s A Wonderful World”, a na albumach „Back To Back” i „Scott’s Buddy” wystąpił w duecie z weteranem saksofonu tenorowego Buddy’m Tate’m. Swą popularność Scott Hamilton utrzymuję przez całe dekady i nadal cieszy się uznaniem wśród słuchaczy i krytyków. Jest także aktywny jako lider i główny solista w zespołach typu all-stars, np. w czasie Newport Jazz Festival All-Stars lub Concord Superband.
Album „Nocturnes & Serenades”, niezwykle charakterystyczny dla stylistyki saksofonisty, Scott Hamilton zrealizował w standardowym kwartecie ( John Pearce-fortepian, Dave Green –kontrabas, Steve Brown-perkusja), co jeszcze bardziej przybliżyło brzmienie do słynnego „websterowskiego” nastroju. Do tego znakomity wybór melancholijnego repertuaru: od standardów „ Man With A Horn”, „Chelsea Bridge” po specyficzne, jazzowe nokturny i serenady ( „ Autumn Nocturne”, „Flamingo”, „Serenade In Blue”).

Czarno-białe zdjęcie na okładce może przywoływać widok ulicy z klubami jazzowymi w Nowym Jorku lat 40. XX wieku lub być kadr z klasycznego filmu noir. Tak czy inaczej, zdjęcie i tytuł obiecują leniwy, romantyczny jazz, który o trzeciej nad ranem snuje się w maleńkich klubacj jazzowych. Nie jest to zaskakujące, biorąc pod uwagę reputację Hamiltona jako czołowego jazzowego neotradycjonalisty. 55-minutowy set rozpoczyna się wyrafinowanym, zrelaksowanym wykonaniem "Man with a Horn", w którym dźwięczny, jedwabisty saksofon Hamiltona wydobywa balladowy idiom kompozycji. Hamiltonowi na płycie "Nocturnes & Serenades" towarzyszą pianista John Pearce, basista Dave Green i perkusista Steve Brown. Delikatny styl Pearce'a i Hamiltona dobrze komponuje się w "Man with a Horn" i w kolejnym "Autumn Nocturne", podczas gdy Green i Brown podkreślają łagodne tempo.

This is Scott Hamilton’s 41st recording as a leader or co-leader for the Concord label since he emerged on the scene at 22 in 1977. It is odd to remember that Hamilton was once controversial. No one worries anymore whether a language so clearly not of its own time has artistic validity. Now a different question presents itself: Given the voluminous documentation of his work and the unvarying continuity of his swing-era tenor saxophone style, do we need more Scott Hamilton albums?
Hamilton does not sound like Don Byas or Ben Webster. He sounds like one of their most gifted contemporaries. Nocturnes & Serenades contains 10 songs beyond time, almost all ballads. Hamilton’s patient portrayals possess definitive elegance. On “You Go to My Head” and “Chelsea Bridge,” he lingers on the melodies in his shamelessly sensuous, velvet tenor sound, like a man who knows them intimately and is thinking about them again and finding unsuspected connotations. “I’m Glad There Is You” is one extended gliding caress.
Hamilton plays here with his regular touring British rhythm section. While these three conservative players are not interesting in themselves, Nocturnes & Serenades leaves you convinced that 41 Scott Hamilton albums are not enough.

Since his debut album, released to considerable critical acclaim in 1977 on Concord Jazz, Scott Hamilton (b. 1954) has established himself as one our foremost tenor saxophone balladeers, one with a keen ear for indelible first-rate tunes. With Nocturnes and Serenades, his forty-first Concord Jazz disc as a leader or co-leader, Hamilton’s balladry takes center stage, and with sublime results. Eight of the ten performances herein are ballads (the medium-tempo exceptions are "Flamingo" and "By the River Sainte Marie"), and Hamilton’s aged-in-oaken-casks approach has never been warmer or more full-bodied.

Now residing in England, the Providence, RI native is backed by his regular touring rhythm section; their empathetic support is at once unobtrusive and in-the-moment. Early in his career it was observed that Hamilton’s sound and conception channeled those of giants Ben Webster and Zoot Sims. But on Nocturnes and Serenades it’s the soul of Scott Hamilton that comes to the fore. And he builds a "Chelsea Bridge" that is every bit on a scale with that of Webster, its previous master architect.
