The Prophetic Herbie Nichols Vol. 1 and The Prophetic Herbie Nichols Vol. 2 is an albums by American jazz pianist Herbie Nichols featuring performances recorded and released on the Blue Note label in 1955 as a 10 inch LP. Although originally unheralded at the time of release Nichols' Blue Note recordings have gained recognition as highly original and ground-breaking compositions and performances. The Allmusic review by Scott Yanow awarded Nichols' The Complete Blue Note Recordings, released in 1997, a five star rating and stated "The music is virtually unclassifiable, and although largely straight-ahead, sounds unlike anything produced by Herbie Nichols' contemporaries. Essential music".
Blue Note founder Alfred Lion considered pianist Herbie Nichols to be as original and important as Thelonious Monk. Little-known in his time, recognition has grown for his unique compositions like "The Third World," and "2300 Skidoo." Both volumes are combined on 1 LP with Vol. 1 on the cover, Vol. 2 on the back, and liner notes inside a gatefold jacket. Blue Note Classic Vinyl Series is all-analog, mastered by Kevin Gray from the original master tapes, and pressed on 180-gram vinyl at Optimal.
