Album ‘Blue Valentine’ bardzo odbiegł od tego, co znalazło się na wcześniejszych albumach Toma Waitsa. Zamieniając fortepian na gitarę, Waits stał się bardziej surowy i bluesowy, czego najlepszym przykładem jest utwór tytułowy.
Artysta znajduje się tutaj także w fazie przejściowej, dzięki czemu dostajemy wspaniałą, orkiestrową aranżację Gershwinowskiego ‘Somewhere’, a także piękną fortepianową balladę ‘Kentucky Ave’. Nie zabrakło też zuchwałych, knajpowych ‘Romeo Is Bleeding’ oraz ‘Whistlin’ Past the Graveyard’. To także płyta przynosząca jedną z najbardziej znanych piosenek Waitsa – ‘Christmas Card from A Hooker in Minneapolis’.

This 1978 release is a real mixed bag that displays the contrasting extremes of Waits’ muse at the time. The album is bookended by a widescreen orchestral version of Bernstein’s standard Somewhere, and the smoky jazz guitar of the understated title track. In between there’s the tragicomic Christmas Card from a Hooker in Minneapolis and the raucous r’n’b of Whistlin' Past the Graveyard. Kentucky Avenue is the obligatory killer tearjerker.
