Susanna Wallumrrod, czyli kolejne natarcie nordyckiego elektropopu, tym razem w składzie syrena na wokalu oraz grupa Norwegów o nieprzepisywalnych i niezapamiętywalnych nazwiskach grająca na thereminie, harfie, melotronie, gitarach i fortepianach w pierwszym oficjalnym solowym materiale panny Susanny.

I jest tak, jak można się było spodziewać po dwóch poprzednich płytach tej wokalistki z towarzyszeniem Magical Orchestra, czyli genialnie. I bez coverów. Co ważne, bo zarówno po List of Lights and Buoys a szczególnie po Melody Mountain (gdzie przygrywał jej były muzyk Jaga Jazzist), można było się spodziewać, że przerabianie cudzych kawałków to właściwa domena Norweżki.


Na Sonata Dwarf Mix Cosmos jednak pani pokazuje, że nie samym coverem żyje człowiek i gdy przychodzi do pisania własnych kompozycji i tekstów też ma całkiem sporo do pokazania. 12 utworów, ponad 40 minut muzyki i teksty skupione po sylvioplathowsku na wewnętrznych przeżyciach podmiotu śpiewającego - na szczęście w odróżnieniu od Sylvi Plath, bez nadmiernej przeckliwionej grafomanii i epatowania deprechą.

Dużo bardziej rozbudowane aranżacje (wystarczy zresztą spojrzeć na skład wymienionych instrumentów), większa przestrzeń w utworach, genialne wykorzystanie ciszy w niektórych kawałkach i nieco większa energia niż na dóch poprzednich. A nad tym wszystkim oczywiście krystalicznie czysty głos pani Wallumrrod, która bez żadnego widocznego napięcia i wysiłku potrafi samym brzmieniem wokalu wyrwać mózg .

Zdecydowanie jest to płyta dla fanów poprzednich dwóch albumów wokalistki, choć tym razem może także przyciągnąc całkiem nowe osoby, którym potrzeba dobrej, jesiennej muzy, na deszcz i paskudztwo za oknem.

This is an achingly lovely record, set simply for voice and piano, full of stark, minimalist, slightly cosmic compositions that hang like fairy lights around Susanna Wallumrod's gorgeous voice, by day the frontwoman of dreamy Norwegian band Susanna and the Magical Orchestra. Images of lost lovers and approaching seasons tow us between the feelings of sorrow and expectation, and each low, soft, baby grand bassline strenghtens the record's gravitational pull.

Based around her clear, pure voice and negligible keyboard backing, coloured by touches of harp, mellotron and guitar, the chiming guitar of the lilting 'Better Days' is about as upbeat as it gets. Sublime and captivating. 4/5.

Like a modern day Nico, she coerces us into emotional involvement while forever remaining coolly detached. The majestic 'Stay' and 'Better Days', built around the hypnotic arpeggios of Oystein Greni's guitar, are sublime in their expressions of sadness. The sparsest of accompamiment. a piano chord here and a strum of harp there, only heightens the tension of her words. If Wallumrod's songcraft requires a little spit and polish, it is only so the beauty of her voice can be better served.
