Fala fascynacji stylową interpretacją muzyki dawnej dotarła na antypody. I tak na przykład Japończycy z Masaakim Suzukim rewelacyjnie grają Bacha. Australijski klawesynista Paul Dyer, wykształcony w Hadze u Van Asperena, S. Kuijkena i Brüggena, wrócił do ojczyzny, założył zespół instrumentów z epoki i podbił interpretacjami Monteverdiego, Vivaldiego i Bacha nie tylko rodzimą publiczność. Koncerty Australian Brandenburg Orchestra z Andreasem Schollem okazały się tak udane, że Decca udokumentowała współpracę artystów płytą. Znalazły się na niej cztery motety i dwa koncerty smyczkowe Vivaldiego.

Motety pochodzą z tego okresu twórczości "Rudego Księdza", kiedy uczył on muzyki utalentowane dziewczęta z przykościelnego weneckiego sierocińca. Dziewczęta zapewniały oprawę wokalno-instrumentalną nabożeństw w swojej macierzystej świątyni, a pamiętać należy, iż w XVIII wieku kobiety bardzo rzadko dopuszczano do występów artystycznych w kościele. Tak więc Vivaldi komponował na głosy żeńskie, dla znajomych śpiewaczek. Dziś otrzymujemy motety w wykonaniu kontratenora, mężczyzny, czyli mamy do czynienia z sytuacją odwrotną niż zazwyczaj, kiedy kobiety śpiewają partie przeznaczone ongiś dla kastratów lub dyszkancistów. Płeć solisty nie ma jednak większego znaczenia, gdyż jego głos jest jedynie medium do wyrażenia słowa Bożego. Tym tropem interpretacyjnym podąża Scholl. Śpiewa w sposób natchniony, żarliwy, a jednocześnie precyzyjny aż do zwrotu głowy. Jak zawsze, zachwyca szlachetną, pełną barwą i absolutną kontrolą nad dźwiękiem i oddechem. Bez trudu ciągnie długie wartości rytmiczne w "Nisi, Dominus". Wzrusza melancholijną szczerością w tymże motecie, potrafi też wywołać nastrój promiennej radości (pierwsze części "Clarae, stellaem scintillate" i "Vestro Principi. divino"). Z zadziwiającą lekkością wykonuje "Salve Regina".

Australian Brandenburg Orchestra to świetny zespół, dyskretnie towarzyszący Schollowi. Najmocniejszą stroną orkiestry są smyczki, cudownie cieniujące dynamikę w koncertach RV 109 i 141. Miejmy nadzieję, że teraz częściej będziemy słuchać nagrań Paula Dyera i jego kolegów.

Why choose a small, relatively unknown orchestra on the other side of the planet when there were so many fine baroque ensembles in England? Scholl's persuading paid off. The recording has a brightness and freshness, a product of the very young orchestra and the vitality of its director. Its beautiful and its fun!
The Nisi Dominus is not as well known as the famous Gloria and is certainly more restrained, more muted. But in its quiet depths, there is a spiritual beauty that the Gloria lacks. While Vivaldi wrote it for adolescent girls at his orphanage, Scholl's performance is sublime, if not exactly authentic.
The other Vivaldi motets, all somewhat rarities, are similarly beautiful. Scholl's voice transports the listener to another world. The concerto interludes balance the tone wonderfully.
This is a CD that rivals in exhiliration a live performance of absolute masters who obviously love their subject. For the ever-growing army of Andreas Scholl fans, this CD is a must-have. And for the sceptical, like me, it will make you a convert.
