Editor's info:
George Dandin (1668), by Molière and the king's troop, is a comedy mixed with a pastoral sung for "the Grand Royal Entertainment of Versailles" offered by Louis XIV to his court. A creaky story inspired by medieval culture, where a rich and odious peasant buys a noble young girl, is enshrined in elegant interludes where shepherds exchange gallant remarks. Molière tells us here that marriage is a market in which love has no part. Even if the piece remains immoral since evil triumphs, it says above all that we can buy everything except love ... that's where it remains timeless.
