Wpływ Jordiego Savalla na kanony wykonawcze muzyki z dawnych wieków jest ogromny. Kataloński wizjoner od wielu już lat przekonuje, że muzyka dawna może być poruszającą lekcją historii. Ma na całym świecie wiernych uczniów, którzy twórczo rozwijają jego koncepcje. Jednym z nich są muzycy tworzący Euskal Barrokensemble z jego założycielem i szefem Enrike Solinísem.

Enrike Solinis wychowywał się w rodzinie o bogatych muzycznych tradycjach w Bilbao. Po lekturze nagrania Paco de Lucia "Almoraima", w wieku 10 lat odkrył swoją miłość do gitary. Enrike stawiał swoje pierwsze kroki w nauce gry na gitarze pod okiem ojca i rozwijał się kształcąc się samodzielnie. Ukończył szkołę muzyczną a następnie studia w konserwatorium w Bilbao, oraz na Escola Luthier d'Arts Musicals w Barcelonie pod kierunkiem Jose Tomasa. Warsztat kompozytorski pogłębiał podczas studiów w Escola Superior de Musica de Catalunya w Barcelonie. Od tego momentu występował, jako solista takich grup jak Hesperion XXI, Le Concert des Nations i the Capella Reial of Catalunya, kierowane przez Jordiego Savalla czy Concerto Vocale i Akademie fur Alte Musik Berlin, prowadzone przez Rene Jacobsa.

Założenie pracy twórczej Enrike Solinisa jest jasne: muzyka jest kwintesencją uniwersalnego języka, który ma siłę jednoczącą przedstawicieli odległych kultur na przestrzeni wieków, tak jak ma to miejsce do dziś. Centralną postacią edytorsko imponującego wydawnictwa Alia Vox (kilkusetstronicowa książka z dwoma płytami) jest baskijski odkrywca - Juan Sebastian Elcano. Uczestnik i kapitan statku po śmierci Ferdynanda Magellana jednej z najsłynniejszych w historii wypraw morskich. Po śmierci Magellana doprowadził z Filipin do Europy jedyny ocalały z flotylli liczącej pięć jednostek galeon Victoria – pierwszy w historii, który opłynął Ziemię dookoła. Dla Elcano udział w wyprawie Magellana był swoistym zesłaniem, bowiem jako kapitan statku handlowego złamał hiszpańskie prawo, oddając statek bankierom genueńskim na spłatę długu, uzyskał od króla Karola I zamianę kary pod warunkiem wzięcia udziału w wyprawie Magellana do Wschodnich Indii. Gdy 6 września 1522 roku przybijał do Sanlúcar de Barrameda wraz z osiemnastoma członkami załogi wszyscy spodziewali się ujrzeć Ferdynanda Magellana, jednak to właśnie Elcano doprowadził dzieło portugalskiego żeglarza w służbie hiszpańskiej. Do dzisiaj wszyscy znają nazwisko słynnego Portugalczyka, niewielu dzielnego Baska.

"The First Voyage Around The World" przywraca pamięć o nim w interesujący sposób. Dokładnie 600 lat temu, 10 sierpnia 1519, portugalski żeglarz i odkrywca Ferdynand Magellan rozpoczął pierwszą w historii wyprawę dookoła świata. Z Sewilli wyruszył z liczącą 270 członków załogą. Po trzech latach 6 września 1522 do macierzystego portu wróciło 18 krańcowo wyczerpanych zdobywców świata, na statku noszącym nazwę "Victoria". Sam Magellan nie wrócił. Muzyczna opowieść rozpoczyna się od wzruszającej "Seikilos’s Epitaph" anonimowego autora, później baskijska "Ale, arraunean" prowadzi nas w głębokie średniowiecze, do krainy dzielnych, nieznających strachu baskijskich żeglarzy. Dalej kompozycje z Macedonii, Nawarry, Andaluzji, Wysp Brytyjskich, Archipelagu Malajskiego, Sycylii, Polinezji, Kastylii i Francji. Bogata reprezentacja spóścizny kultury żydowskiej i islamu, tradycyjnej kultury baskijskiej, która dominuje na obu płytach. Karkołomne przedsięwzięcie grupy Basków, specjalizujących się w historycznej interpretacji muzyki z wiodącą rolą gitarzysty Enrike’a Solinísa, daje nam sposobność do zapoznania się z mało znaną historią, która poszerza naszą wiedzę o świecie i pozwala na lepsze zrozumienie teraźniejszości.

Alia Vox invites us to a new journey alongside the man who completed the first circumnavigation of the Earth between 1519 and 1521 : Juan Sebastian Elkano, a Spanish explorer of Basque origin, took command of the expedition after Magellan’s Death in the Philippines and returned to Andalusia with 17 other survivors of the 240 man expedition. Enrike Solinis and his musicians portray the basque tradition of the young Elkano before embarking for the Villancicos of the New World, the repertoires of Polynesia, the Mollucas and the Islam at its peak.

For those of us who are lucky enough to have been able to travel in space and time with Jordi Savall as members of his ensembles and to learn from each of his projects, launching a new programme with the figure of the outstanding Basque navigator Juan Sebastián Elcano to guide us on a musical journey through his world and his times is a congenial task. The premise is clear and the principle is a simple one: music is the quintessential universal language, which has united remote peoples through the ages, as it still does today. The same man who, 500 years ago, took part in an expedition commanded by Ferdinand Magellan to find the Spice Islands for the Crown of Castile, and who despite having established a landmark in universal history by circumnavigating the Earth, is nowadays unknown in much of the world, and yet provides us with a perspective on the past which enhances our enjoyment and understanding of the present.

In this project, therefore, Euskal Barrokensemble returns to its origins as a music group, telling our story in the first person and taking the opportunity on the 500th anniversary of the first circumnavigation of the Earth to recall that global connectedness, as illustrated in the life of Juan Sebastián Elcano, is the essence of our plural nature as human beings.
