Shawn Colvin i Steve Earle po raz pierwszy wystąpili razem w 1987 roku w Massachusetts. Zapewne nikt nie spodziewał się, że od tamtego wieczoru musi minąć prawie 30 lat, żeby światło dzienne ujrzał debiutancki album tego wyjątkowego duetu. Lepiej jednak późno, niż wcale – na ten krążek zdecydowanie warto było czekać. Głosy Colvin i Earle’a doskonale się do siebie pasują – jego szorstkość cudownie współgra z jej delikatnością. Jednym z najciekawszych momentów albumu jest utwór „Tell Moses”, wzbogacony o partie mandoliny i harmonijki ustnej.

Album został nagrany pod czujnym okiem Buddy’ego Millera w jego studiu w Nashville. Producent zaangażował swój zespół (w którym występuje m. in. długoletni przyjaciel Earle’a – Richard Bennett), zagrał też w kilku piosenkach na gitarze barytonowej.
Płyta powstała w prawdziwie rodzinnej i przyjaznej atmosferze. Jej ciepłe brzmienie pozytywnie usposobi każdego fana muzyki folkowej.

Shawn Colvin jest w Polsce praktycznie nieznana (choć w samych tylko Stanach sprzedała kilka milionów swoich płyt). Gra od momentu, kiedy jako dziesięciolatka dostała gitarę. Jest w nieustającej trasie koncertowej od pierwszego koncertu na Uniwersytecie Illinois (miała wtedy piętnaście lat) i późniejszych tourach wszerz i w poprzek USA, gdzie poznała Johna Leventhala, który ją odkrył i zachęcił do doskonalenia talentu.
Czas pokazał, że odkrył prawdziwą perłę, która otrzymała nie tylko Grammy Award, ale podbiła serca Amerykanów i bywa porównywana do Emmylou Harris, Joni Mitchell, a miała też na scenie okazję występować z samą Bonnie Raitt.

Steve Earle z kolei to teksański wokalista, gitarzysta i zarazem kompozytor country-rockowy. Niezwykle ceniony w Ameryce. Niewiele osób wie, że ten teksański trubadur jest zarazem świetnym aktorem. W jego muzyce silnie przywiązanej do tradycji country, nigdy nie brakowało rockowej zadziorności, co także tyczy się jego drugiego bardziej balladowego oblicza - pełnego goryczy i takiej pozytywnej złości.

Produced by the masterful Buddy Miller and recorded in his living room studio, Colvin & Earle contains six co-written originals plus inspired covers including the Rolling Stones 'Ruby Tuesday,' and Emmylou Harris 'Raise the Dead.' Few things can touch the magic of artists so in tune that they seem to be able to read each other s minds. Colvin & Earle is a prime showcase for their inimitable vocals and mesmerizing guitar playing, a flawless example of the creative process gelling into a gorgeous, cohesive whole. Shawn Colvin has landed a few tunes on the pop charts over the course of her career, and Steve Earle was briefly a legitimate country star. But in 2016, as the two team up for their first album as a duo, Colvin & Earle are folkies -- hip folkies, to be sure, but at heart two singer/songwriters on the far side of 50 who like swapping harmonies and strumming their acoustic guitars. Colvin & Earle sound like good friends who enjoy singing together, and this album has a lively and spontaneous atmosphere, especially when the two are singing old covers. For Shawn and Steve's generation, if "Tobacco Road," "Ruby Tuesday," and "You Were on My Mind" don't qualify as folk songs, it's hard to imagine what would, and "Tell Moses" borrows enough from a fistful of old traditional numbers that it feels more like a cover than a Colvin/Earle original, despite the songwriting credits. Colvin's voice, still sweet if seasoned by time, proves to be a fine match for Earle's more rugged instrument, and he shows good instincts as he dodges in and around her lead lines. Buddy Miller produced the Colvin & Earle sessions, and he gives these recordings a sound that's rich but doesn't sound fussed over, especially the deep bass and drums (from Chris Wood and Fred Eltringham) and the layers of guitar provided by Earle, Miller, and Richard Bennett. Colvin & Earle sound great on the covers on this album, and quite good on the originals. This effort seems to be another example of a project where the songwriters were saving their A-list material for their own set, but if "You're Right (I'm Wrong") and "Happy and Free" don't rank with the best songs either Colvin or Earle have written, they're a long, long way from bad. They reflect facets of each tunesmith, and they're not likely to let down fans of either artist. Colvin & Earle plays more like a detour for these two artists rather than the beginning of a long-standing collaboration, but the enthusiasm here is honest and the result is a good week's work that leaves room for a sequel.
