Wznowienie słynnej, pierwszej autorskiej płyty Erica Dolphy'ego, na której prezentuje on swój autorski kwintet z trębaczem Freddiem Hubbardem, pianistą (znanym choćby z sekstetu Charlesa Mingusa) Jaki Byardem, basistą George Tuckerem oraz Royem Haynesem na perkusji. Album zarejestrowano w 1960 roku i było to pierwsze z wielu spotkania lidera z Freddiem Hubbardem.
Wydanie wzbogacone zostało o dodatkowe utwory, alternatywne wersje dwóch własnych kompozycji Dolphy'ego: "G.W." oraz "245" pochodzących z tej samej sesji oraz dwa standardy "Bali Ha'i" i "The Things We Did Last Summer" nagrane w kwintecie Dolphy'ego z Tedem Cursonem i Kennym Drew w 1961 roku.

Outward Bound was Eric Dolphy's first album as a leader. He had been recording since 1948, when he was a member of the Roy Porter orchestra, and in the twelve years that separate those early sides from Outward Bound he would gain renown as a member of the Chico Hamilton Quintet, just before joining Charles Mingus in 1960, for the first of their various collaborative phases. Outward Bound also marked Dolphy's first recording with trumpeter Freddie Hubbard, with whom he would participate on various projects until February 1964. Both musicians are heard on Ornette Coleman's Free Jazz, Oliver Nelson's The Blues and the Abstract Truth, John Coltrane's Africa Brass and Olé, Benny Golson's Just Jazz, Hubbard's own album The Body and the Soul, and Dolphy's Out to Lunch. Soon after making Out to Lunch, Dolphy embarked on a European tour with the Charles Mingus Sextet, whose group he left at the end of April with the intention of staying in Europe for a while in order to try his luck as a soloist. However, on June 28, 1964, Dolphy, who hadn't been feeling well over the previous days, collapsed in his hotel room in Berlin. He died on June 29, 1964, just nine days after turning 36-years old, leaving a short but tremendous legacy in the jazz world.
