Wyjątkowy album Stefano Bollaniego jest poświęcony Neapolowi. Włoski pianista zaprosił do współpracy artystów reprezentujących rozmaite muzyczne światy, co pozwoliło spojrzeć na miasto z różnych perspektyw i oddać jego klimat na różne sposoby. Na „Napoli Trip” usłyszymy, zatem z jednej strony tradycyjną muzykę neapolitańską, reprezentowaną przez Daniele Sepe’a, Raffaele Vivianiego, czy Nino Taranto, z drugiej zaś – bardziej współczesne dźwięki, wykonane przez norweskiego DJa Jana Banga.

Z wieloma artystami, którzy wzięli udział w nagraniu tego albumu Bolani współpracował po raz pierwszy. Na potrzeby „Napoli Trip” wszedł w skład kwartetu, razem z Nino Gorim (klarnet), wspomnianym już Sepem (flet, saksofon) oraz Manu Katche (perkusja). Zespół zarejestrował nowe kompozycje autorstwa włoskiego pianisty.

Na krążku znalazły się też bardziej intymne momenty, podczas których Bolani solo wykonuje utwory swoich ulubionych kompozytorów (Carosone, Pino Daniele). Jest tu też piosenka Lorenzo Hengellera, którą włoski pianista nie tylko gra, ale też śpiewa.

Album kończy się wielkim klasykiem - utworem Reginella, wzbogaconym brzmieniem mandoliny Hamiltona de Holandy.

There are jigging Naples street dances that become pressing contemporary grooves, the late singer-songwriter Pino Daniele’s Putesse Essere Allero is a poignant solo meditation, and O Sole Mio an accelerating piano dance in which the famous tune races to keep up. The 60s comedy-movie hit theme Caravan Petrol is a jazz-piano twister and one of the standouts, while Bollani gently croons the lyric of Lorenzo Hengeller’s Guapparia 2000 with a rare vocal straightfacedness, and plays the closing waltz as a lovely duet with Brazilian bandolim master Hamilton de Holanda (. . .)

Napoli Trip is a homage to Naples and in some ways brings lots of strands – solo piano, interpretations of Italian song, Norwegian electronics, collaborations with Brazilian bandolim-player Hamilton de Holanda, a new quartet with Manu Katché on percussion – into a brilliant whole. Just try tracks nine and ten, the former a solo piano reworking of O Sole Mio, the latter a grooving Quel Che Si Diventa ever-evolving for the new band, with soaring clarinet and characteristic Katché beat, Bollani at the centre directing it all. Caravan Petrol is a reminder of Bollani’s pianistic virtuosity, and the title track has definite circus elements – it could be the soundtrack for a Fellini film. In fact the whole album could be, with Frank Z standing in the background of Federico’s set.
The perfect cure for narcoleptics and cynical jazz reviewers everwhere. (. . .)
