Shanachie Records is on a roll. First came their Kickin the 3, a collection of soul-jazz organ grooves. Now comes Kickin' Some Brass (Shanachie 6028, 64:03) which does the same for the deadly New Orleans marching band tradition. Like its predecessor, Kickin'... doesn't pretend to be a comprehensive representation of the genre, that would take two or three discs. It does, however manage to offer a pretty interesting cross-#section. There's the funk: The New Birth Brass Band's "Ms. Lollipop" and the Re-Birth Brass Band's "Rollin." There's the swing: Lester Bowie's Brass Fantasy's "Siesta for the Fiesta" and there's the gospel-the Treme Brass Band's "Just a Closer Walk with Thee." And then there's the stuff that shows the tradition in a different light as a fitting vehicle for nearly any interpretive muse. If you doubt, there's the Les Miserables Brass Band's cover of Hendrix's "Manic Depression," turning the world's most violent waltz into an opportunity for some flatulent mischief.

Over the past twenty years, a number of innovative new groups have been pushing the limits of traditional New Orleans brass-band music by incorporating elements of funk, bebop, and even rap. The result is some of the most raucous, spirited and funky music being made today. This compilation album from Shanachie includes contributions from New Orleans stalwarts like the Dirty Dozen, Rebirth and Olympia Brass Band. Also featured are such diverse non-New Orleans groups as Lester Bowie's Brass Fantasy (led by the Art Ensemble of Chicago trumpeter) and the Les Miserables Brass Band (led by Frank London of the Klezmatics), who offer a not-to-be-missed cover of Jimi Hendrix's "Manic Depression."

All About Jazz
Brass bands were around before jazz was born. And while they've mostly disappeared from the American musical landscape, in New Orleans, where it all began, they've never gone away. Brass bands remain a part of life in the Big Easy, where they still perform in public events like funerals, parades, and Mardi Gras.

Great party music and ample proof that the New Orleans brass band tradition is still going strong.
