Editor's info:
ONE OF BIRD'S MORE PASSIONATE PERFORMANCES IN ITS ENTIRETY!!
Among its many highlights is the fact that Bird is the only horn featured throughout (and he is in wonderful form!), and that it presents Parker's only recorded versions of tunes like 'Sly Mongoose' and 'Gold Rush'. As a bonus, three rare Birdland broadcasts, including the only existing collaborations of the saxophonist with pianist Kenny Drew.
Includes 12-page booklet
The Rockland Palace was a dance hall, and September 26, 1952 was a special occasion. The dance that day was organized in honor of Benjamin J. Davis, an official of both the American communist party and The Daily Worker. Davis was in jail, sentenced to a five - year confinement after being convicted in 1949 under the Smith Act, according to which it was illegal 'to teach or advocate the forcible overthrow of the United States Government'. The profits of the evening, which lasted for more than five hours, went into a fund for 'The Provisional Committee for Amnesty'. A campaigner against segregation and racial discrimination, Davis was a hero in Harlem and in 1952 more than 14,000 persons signed a petition asking for his release. It is not known to what extent Charlie Parker involved himself in politics. However, all of his preserved interviews give evidence that he obviously had an open mind in issues that affected him directly such as racism. In opposition to the posture sometimes exhibited by other Afro-American musicians like Miles Davis, who openly criticized white jazz musicians (even if, it is fair to say, he never hesitated to hire them if he admired their musical talents, as was the case with Bill Evans or Gil Evans), Charlie Parker always spoke against the existence of any racial frontiers in music. As said before, the event lasted for more than five hours and Parker performed multiple sets, sometimes in a quintet format with Mundell Lowe on guitar (Bird is the only horn here), sometimes adding a string section.
