Louis Sclavis - pochodzący z Lyonu francuski klarnecista to wyjątkowa postać w światowym jazzie. Współpracował z wieloma muzykami jak Cecil Tylor, Evan Parker, Lol Coxhill, Tony Oxley, Peter Brötzmann, the Brotherhood of Breath Chrisa McGregora, Henri Texier i Trilok Gurtu. Jest autorem muzyki do filmów i spektaklów teatralnych. Niezwykle ciekawym projektem, do którego Sclavis napisał muzykę, był inspirowany sztukami pięknymi, niemy francuski film "Dans la nuit". Współpracował także ze znakomitymi muzykami i kompozytorami muzyki klasycznej, min. Brianem Ferneyhoughem i Pierrem Boulez.

Ouch! Records wydało właśnie po raz pierwszy na winylu album oryginalnie wydany w 1992 roku Sextetu Louisa Sclavisa dedykowany wielkiemu Ellingtonowi.
Płyta zdobyła wtedy prestiżową nagrodę Django d'Or i została utytułowana mianem “Best French Jazz record of the year”.
"Ellington On The Air" nie jest zwykłym hołdem złożonym wielkiemu poprzednikowi. Jest czymś zdecydowanie więcej. To swoista re-kreacja. Sam Sclavis mówi "To nagranie nie jest ani parodia, ani balsamowaniem, dorobek Ellingtona jest punktem wyjścia, jego obecność w języku jazzu jest bardzo inspirująca, znaleźliśmy wspólną nić łączącą to co zostało dokonane z tym co teraz".

Wariacje na ellingtonowskie tematy urzekają swoim kameralnym charakterem, głębią i spójnością. Klarnecista Louis Sclavis jest tutaj oczywiście wiodącą postacią, ale nie sposób nie wspomnieć o skrzypku Dominique Pifarelym, kontrabasiście Bruno Chevillonie i pianiście François Raulinie. Z dwoma pierwszymi połączy Sclavisa wieloletnia przyjaźń.
Sam lider, obdarzony niezwykłą swobodę improwizatorską, muzykalnością i oryginalnym brzmieniem klarnetu dba o rozsądnie dawkowaną wirtuozerią wykonawczą poszczególnych instrumentalistów, tworząc w efekcie dzieło wyjątkowe, dobrze rozplanowane i przemyślane. Za to właśnie cenimy Louisa Sclavisa!

Ouch! Records is proud to present a seminal album of French Jazz for the first time on vinyl. Originally released in 1992 and winner of the Django d'Or prize “Best French Jazz record of the year” in 1993, the CD has long been out of print.
Ellington on the air is more than just a tribute to Duke Ellington: it's a real recreation. As Louis Sclavis himself reminds us: "Neither parody nor embalming, but presence, point of departure, common thread, inspirer".

Voulu comme une suite à sa création en sextet en hommage à Duke Ellington pour le Festival de Jazz de Paris, le disque est enregistré aux Gimmick Studio, à Yerres en 1991. Au coté de Louis Sclavis : Yves Robert (trombone), Dominique Pifarély (violons acoustique & électrique), François Raulin (piano, claviers), Bruno Chevillon (contrebasse) et Francis Lassus (batterie).
Ellington on the air est beaucoup plus qu’un simple hommage à Duke Ellington : c’est une véritable recréation. Comme Louis Sclavis le rappelle lui-même : « Ni parodie, ni embaumement, mais présence, point de départ, fil conducteur, inspirateur ».


This sextet, with whom I created two programmes and played during ten years was for me the ideal group, as much for its instrumentation as for the musicians’ personalities.
The disk « Les Violence de Rameau » is still available on the ECM label but the first project at IDA records has long stopped to be published.
I always felt close to the music of Duke Ellington and the sound of his orchestra. His suites in particular, as for Beethoven’s symphonies, have told me familiar stories since childhood.
The desire to confront myself with his music came naturally to me. That is why I spoke to André Francis at the time who followed me in this project which was performed in 1990 for the first time at the Festival de Jazz de Paris.
When Lionel Martin asked me if I wanted to suggest one of my projects for his vinyl editions, I thought about this one, which is perfect for reissuing on this format.
Philippe Tessier Ducros, who had recorded the project, remastered it remarkably: the sound is much better than on the 1991 CD edition and this work alone justifies completely the new edition.
After having played this project for so many years, in so many countries, and at so many festivals, continuing to keep it alive is a great pleasure for me. It is also a way of staying tuned with this music, this marvellous sextet, and its talented musicians and composers.

Django d’or 1993 in the category “Best French jazz record of the year”, the album Ellington on the air of Louis Sclavis Sextet, published on the IDA label Philippe Vincent, sees again the day. These goldsmiths of scores around the world of Duke, made and served by peerless instrumentalists, were recorded at Gimmick Studio, in Yerres in 1991. Remastered brilliantly, recording vinyl released in 500 copies, on the new label promising Ouch! Records. A digital version will also be offered by Cristal Records.
