Down Beat original review: Freedom Suite
"The suite was a challenge. It is a program piece about the Negro in America of serious intention. But Rollins' real achievements so far have come because he is one of the few hornmen in the history of jazz (perhaps the first) who can give in a long improvisation a sense of structure and development." (Martin Williams)

This release presents a collection of outstanding trio studio recordings by Sonny Rollins made during 1957-58. Comprised here are the complete original LP Freedom Suite (Riverside RLP12-258), in which Sonny is backed by such stars as Oscar Pettiford and Max Roach. Rollins later said. "At the time it struck me, what did it all mean if you were still a nigger, so to speak? This is the reason I wrote the suite." "The suite" refers to the famous composition "Freedom Suite", a nineteen minute piece that featured Rollins, accompanied only by bass and drums. It was jazz music's first explicit extended instrumental protest piece, and its intentions were discussed in the original liner notes written by Rollins: "America is deeply rooted in Negro culture: its colloquialisms, its humor, its music. How ironic that the Negro, who more than any other people can claim America's culture as his own, is being persecuted and repressed, that the Negro, who has exemplified the humanities in his very existence, is being rewarded with inhumanity." Also included here are an entire session featuring Henry Grimes and Specs Wright (first issued on Sonny Rollins and the Big Brass - MetroJazz 1002 -, the session also includes an amazing unaccompanied sax improvisation on "Body and Soul"), and further isolated trio (and duet) recordings by Rollins which originally appeared on a variety of albums featuring bigger groups.
