This release contains two complete consecutive albums by Bob Brookmeyer, The Blues Hot and Cold and 7 X Wilder, both appearing here on CD for the first time ever. The two LPs were recorded in a quartet format with Brookmeyer and drummer Mel Lewis present on both. On the first of the two they are backed by Jimmy Rowles on piano and Buddy Clark on bass, while on the second Bill Crow plays the bass and Brookmeyer alternates between trombone and piano, leaving the fourth chair to guitarist Jim Hall (with whom he had worked extensively as members of the Jimmy Giuffre 3). Brookmeyer and Mel Lewis had a long history of playing together dating back to their time with the 1952 Tex Beneke orchestra. The Blues Hot and Cold consists of a traditional trombone quartet, with piano, bass and drums, and the repertoire is a combination of jazz standards, original compositions by Brookmeyer and a half-original, the interesting variation on 'Stompin' at the Savoy' which Brookmeyer jokingly titled 'Stoppin' at the Savoy'. 7 X Wilder is a more unconventional project, consisting of a collection of compositions by Alec Wilder (with the exception of Brookmeyer's 'Blues for Alec'). The instrumentation is also unconventional, with Brookmeyer alternating between the trombone and his second instrument, the piano, and Jim Hall as a second soloist on guitar.
