Puzonista, aranżer i kompozytor J. J. (James Louis) Johnson należy do elitarnego grona puzonistów, którzy odcisnęli największe piętno na historii tego instrumentu w jazzie. Współpracował z gigantami jazzu jak Milesem Davisem, Gil Evans, Count Basie, Charlie Parker, Dizzy Gillespie, Fats Navarro, Max Roach ale także prowadził własne zespoły, z których najsłynniejszym był big-band, którym kierował wspólnie z Kaiem Windingiem.
"Opera za trzy grosze" Kurta Weilla to wydawałoby się bardzo wdzięczny materiał do interpretacji, jednak nagrań czysto instrumentalnych w historii jazzu nie było wcale wiele, a szkoda!
wystarczy wspomnieć wspaniałą płytę Erika Dolphy'ego i Johna Lewisa "Play Kurt Weill" aby dostrzec niesamowity potencjał ukryty w kompozycjach Kurta Weilla. Pokazuje to jednak jak trudno jest oddać bajkowość, humor, beztroskę i magię świata wielkiego Niemca skoro niewielu zdecydowało sie siegnąć do jego kompozycji.
Płyta "Play Mack The Knife And Other Kurt Weill Songs" zawiera blisko 70 minut muzyki, na które składają się dwa wydawnictwa dostępne dotąd WYŁĄCZNIE na płytach analogowych. Mamy więc do czynienia z pierwszą edycją na CD obu tytułów: "Plays Mack the Knife" i "Trombone and Voices". Pierwsza sesja powstała w kwartecie: André Previn: piano, Red Mitchell: bass, Frank Capp: drums i lider na puzonie.
Druga płyta nagrana została we czerwcu 1960 z towarzyszeniem orkiestry i sekcji wokalnej pod dyrekcją Franka De Vola. Legendarny producent płyt Milesa Davisa - Teo Macero tak pisał we wkładce do płyty "This album marks one of those rare occasions when idea, artist and arranger met in a harmonious blending of talent. It has often been said that the timbre of the trombone closely resembles that of the human voice."
W obu przypadkach mamy doczynienia z prawdziwym dziełem, na "Plays Mack the Knife" mamy więc niezwyczajny duet: Kurt Weill/Jazz i niezwyczajny kwartet złożony z pierwszoplanowych gwiazd jazzu.
Druga płyta "Trombone and Voices" emanuje tą wyjątkową energią, spotykaną tylko w nagraniach z lat 50. i 60., zaskakuje arcyciekawym zestawieniem partii instrumentalnych i wokalnych, wszystko w bardzo szlachetnej oprawie jazzowej orkiestry.

The complete quartet LP Plays Mack the Knife, appearing here on CD for the first time ever. It presents Johnson fronting a quartet that includes André Previn on piano, Red Mitchell on bass and Frank Capp on drums playing songs
by the celebrated Kurt Weill. As a bonus, we have added another complete LP by Johnson, Trombone and Voices, which also appears here on CD for the first time ever.

Considering that J. J. Johnson was usually featured in either a quintet format, a sextet with co-leader and fellow trombonist Kai Winding, or playing as a guest soloist with larger combos or big bands, his quartet recordings are not so numerous. He had previously recorded a couple of quartet tracks, and even led a session on which he was the only horn (on September 24, 1954, it was in fact a quintet session as Sabu was added on congas on most of the tracks). His first complete quartet LP, however, was First Place, recorded in 1957 with the all-star rhythm section of Tommy Flanagan on piano, Paul Chambers on bass and Max Roach on drums. Those sessions went very well and produced material for a second quartet album, Blue Trombone. This quartet would never record again, and Johnson wouldn't record again in a quartet format until 1960 (the album was titled A Touch of Satin and featured Victor Feldman on piano, Sam Jones on bass and Louis Hayes on drums). The album Mack the Knife is the following quartet album in Johnson's discography after A Touch of Satin. He would return frequently to this format during 1963 and 1964. These are also the trombonist's only existing recordings with either Previn, Mitchell or Capp. As a bonus, we have added another album appearing here on CD for the first time ever. On Trombone and Voices Johnson is also the only soloing horn, but he's backed here by a big band and chorus conducted and arranged by Frank De Vol.
