The pianist, recently mentioned with his own Helge Lien Trio, and alto and soprano saxophonist Rolf-Erik Nystrøm, know each other well - very well. They go way back in time and have played and studied together for years. They were also born on the same day 31 years ago and not only that: their fathers are also exactly the same age!
There is something extraordinary about the two men in HERO. This is also the case with the totally improvised music. Because the two know each other as well as they do, a lot of this actually seems made up. This is not the case, but the observations from the planet HERO do not become any less valuable for that reason - quite the opposite.
The recording was made live at the Academy of Music in Oslo in February 2004 and must have been a beautiful journey for those who had booked a ticket. With Jan Erik Kongshaug as responsible for the recordings, this will be conveyed in the best possible way. This is beautiful, different and endlessly exciting.
Lien and Nystrøm individually and together have a lot of references: Jazz, folk music from a number of areas, contemporary music and classical music are some of them and they make use of everything on this excursion to the planet HERO.
They travel, observe and report back to us down here and the journey has clearly been as exciting for Lien and Nystrøm as it has been for us. This is extroverted and partly highly melodic freely improvised music where the musicians have been as surprised by what they have found as we have been.
HERO are two exceptionally attentive and empathetic musicians. The planet with the same name is obviously a place worth checking out in the future. There may have been observers from the Balkans there in the past, there have been beings we have never heard of before and of course a lot of exciting things happen in such an untouched place.
The music is then both unheard and untouched - it has never been played before and will never be played again - and therefore this excursion with and to HERO is recommended at its most cosmic.
