Legendarny kompozytor jazzowy, bandlider, wibrafonista, basista, flecista, saksofonista barytonowy Gunter Hampel jest jednym z najbardziej wpływowych muzyków, kompozytorów i pionierów kreatywnego jazzu. Od czasu nagrania płyty z Heartplants Quintet w 1964 roku, z pianistą Alexandrem von Schlippenbachem, trębaczem Manfredem Schoofem, basista Buschim Niebergallem i drummerem Pierre'm Courbois, był jedną z najważniejszych figur free-jazzowej rewolucji na starym kontynencie. Jednak Europa okazała się za mała dla osobowości Hampela, w 1969 roku przenosi się do Nowego Jorku, gdzie koncertuje i nagrywa z Marionem Brownem, Archie'm Sheppem, Cecilem Taylorem, Donem Cherry'm, . . . Anthony'm Braxtonem. Z tym ostatnim w nagrał genialny album “Het 8th sof Jul 1969”. Na płycie słyszymy ponadto perkusistę Stevena McCalla, basistę Arjena Gortera oraz saksofonistę Willema Breukera.
Jako muzyk wymykający się wszelkim klasyfikacjom współpracował też z kompozytorami kojarzonymi z XX-wieczną awangardą jak Hans-Werner Henze, Krzysztof Penderecki i Louis Andriessen.

Osiem kompozycji, które wykonał wraz zespołem to ekscytująca muzyczna opowieść, której koloryt i atomowy wręcz ładunek emocjonalny sprawia, że mamy wrażenie obcowania z dziełem zamkniętym, kompletnym. Jakże rzadko miewamy po przesłuchaniu płyty taką refleksję?
Dzięki troskliwie wybieranym dźwiękom, raz to olśniewająco pięknym, raz szorstkim i wydawałoby się przypadkowym, muzycy wprowadzają nas w świat nieposkromionej wyobraźni, prawdziwej wolności twórczej, oddechu, i artystycznej erudycji.
Jeśli muzyka jest mową dźwięków to Gunter Hampel osiągnął tu prawdziwe mistrzostwo!

Music is a timeless force, constantly ebbing and flowing, a steady sea of sound. At once reliable and unpredictable, there are few people who personify the ever changing and evolving nature of music – of Jazz in its freer forms in particular – better than Gunter Hampel. Going on eighty at the time of this live recording from a concert at the Theater Gütersloh on June 17, 2017, he plays bass-clarinet, vibes, flute and saxophone, and contributed all of the compositions here. “It is important to never stop learning, to stay curious”, he says during the interview at the end of this album. “And that’s why the joy never left – and then you get to be so old doing this.”

Born in Göttingen, Germany, Hampel has been living and playing Jazz around the world for more than seven decades, befriending and recording with likeminded masters such as Anthony Braxton, Marion Brown, Steve McCall, Leo Smith, John Tchicai, Archie Shepp, John McLaughlin, as well as Miles Davis, Charles Mingus, or Thelonious Monk. “Jazz music exists in this world, so that things become clear”, he says, and demonstrates this in a diverse and dynamic set that playfully bounces from Bebop to Hip Hop via Orff-ian Folkestry, referencing the sonic concepts of Charlie Parker’s “Billie’s Bounce” as much as Big Sean’s “Bounce Back”.

The concert starts from the back, literally, with Hampel and his “Berlin-New York Quartet” with Johannes Schleiermacher on sax and flute, Bernd Oezsevim on drums, and his daughter Cavana Lee-Hampel on vocals, entering the venue from the rear of the auditorium and making their way to the stage in a Conga line to the aptly titled “Kindred Spirits”. “Musically I prefer that you don’t have to fight for your space, but also listen to the other players”, Hampel notes. “In the end it is the spiritual value that determines whether something stays with the listener or not.” Götz Bühler

Gunter Hampel (born 31 August 1937) is a German jazz vibraphonist, clarinettist, saxophonist, flautist, pianist and composer born in Göttingen, Germany, perhaps best known for his album The 8th of July 1969 that included fellow musicians Anthony Braxton, Willem Breuker and Jeanne Lee. Jeanne, now deceased, was Gunter's wife.

Hampel became dedicated to free jazz in the 1960s, developing his own record label (Birth Records), and worked with a variety of artists over the years, including John McLaughlin, Muruga Booker, Laurie Allan, Udo Lindenberg, Pierre Courbois and Perry Robinson. In the 1970s he also formed the Galaxie Dream Band.
