Günter "Baby" Sommer to jeden z mistrzów współczesnej europejskiej muzyki jazzowej (właściwie chyba awangardowej). Urodzony w 1943 roku w Dreźnie współtworzył ponadgatunkową europejską scenę muzyki improwizowanej. Za wspólników tej artystycznej rewolty miał Petera Brötzmanna, Petera Kowalda, Wadadę Leo Smitha, Alberta Mangelsdorffa, Alexandra von Schlippenbacha i Conrada Bauera. Nie dziwi więc solidna objętość jego dyskografii, która liczy sporo ponad 100 pozycji płytowych. Te najsłynniejsze to:

Kwartet złożony z trójki nestorów kreatywnego jazzu - Güntera 'Baby' Sommera, trębacza Manfreda Schoofa, klarnecisty Gianluigiego Trovesiego i włoskiego kontrabasistę młodszego pokolenia - Antonio Borghiniego serwuje gorącą, żywą muzykę w nieskrępowanej koncertowej akcji, niepowtarzalny koloryt brzmień i porywająca energia.
Choć Günter "Baby" Sommer doskonale czuje się na terytoriach całkowicie wyzwolonej improwizacji, to tutaj mamy do czynienia z muzyką improwizowaną, realizowaną w oparciu o gotowe kompozycje własne członków zespołu.
Rytuał wolności artystycznej kontemplowany jest w tak intensywnym skupieniu, że na myśl przychodzą wspaniałe nagrania koncertowe kwartetów Ornette'a Colemana czy wspólnych nagrań Sonny Rollins/Don Cherry Quartet.

Wszystkie płyty tej serii łączy miejsce rejestracji, Theater Gütersloh w Niemczech, sali o wyjątkowej akustyce, audiofilską jakość słychać w każdym nagraniu. Przestrzeń akustyczna koncertu zdaje się nie mieć ograniczeń w jakimkolwiek wymiarze.

Płyta "Le Piccole Cose - Live At Theater Gütersloh" to dowód na niegasnący potencjał muzyki opartej na abstrakcie swobodnego grania, który co ważne, nic przy tym nie traci z melodyjności i groove'u. Ale najwięcej przyjemności daje tu po prostu obcowanie z wyśmienitymi improwizatorami o charyzmatycznym brzmieniu, mocnym i prawdziwym. Niewielu dziś w jazzie ludzi tego formatu.

The CD of Günter “Baby” Sommer is the ninth publication in the “European Jazz Legends” series. We from Intuition Records are very proud of this and would like to thank all partners and especially the musicians – and hope that you enjoy this series.

„We are called „Günter Baby Sommer’s Quarteto Trionfale“, the 73 year old drummer from Radebeul near Dresden said right before this concert to make sure the band would be announced correctly. „You know, like „Art Blakey’s Jazz Messengers“.“ The fact that Sommer feels a deep connection to the African-American roots of Jazz also resonates in his nickname, which can be traced back to Louis Armstrong’s drummer „Baby“ Dodds. It is no contradiction, that this „Baby“ belongs to the generation of East German musicians, who, some forty years ago, caused a stir with their mostly improvised music in and around what was then the GDR. As a sound artist in general and a percussionist in particular, as a soloist or an instrumentalist in an ensemble, Sommer is and has always been interested in widening the instrumental range of his drumset and discovering new repertoire. "If you ask the African-American colleagues where they come from, they say, 'Mother Africa.' And where do we come from? This search began with the Zentralquartett with Uli Gumpert, and so we found the medieval songs. For West-German colleagues like Brötzmann and so on, the thought alone was impossible. For us, “free“ stood for freedom in every direction.“

For his concert in the series "European Jazz Legends" at the Theater Gütersloh on October 31, 2016, presented by WDR 3, Jazz in Gütersloh, Intuition and Jazz thing, Günter "Baby" Sommer (almost) reunited a band he first played with at Jazzwerkstatt Peitz in 1979. In order to „counter“ the possibly compromising influence of trumpeter Manfred Schoof from West Germany, the cultural bureaucracy demanded that the band also included Gianluigi Trovesi, bass clarinet and alto saxophone, from Italy and the American double bass player Barre Philips. For a while now, the latter has been aptly replaced by Antonio Borghini, an Italian from Berlin, who previously can be heard in this series in the band of Alexander von Schlippenbach.


About the artist
Günter Baby Sommer is one of the master musicians of contemporary European jazz. He belongs to the circle of extraordinary drummers that developed throughout the improvised music scene a highly individual playing and built up an unmistakable?
Born in Dresden in 1943, Sommer studied at the Hochschule für Musik „Carl Maria von Weber“. Then his musical contributions the most important jazz groups of the GDR like the Ernst-Ludwig-Petrowksy-Trio, Zentralquartett and the Ulrich Gumpert Workshopband made it possible for him to get involved in the international scene. Thus, Sommer not only worked in trio with Wadada Leo Smith and Peter Kowald but took part in fascinating meetings with Peter Brötzmann, Fred van Hove, Alexander von Schlippenbach, Evan Parker and Cecil Taylor. His solowork enabled him for intense collaborations with writers as Günter Grass.
Sommer’s discography comprises around 100 records. As a professor at the Hochschule für Musik Dresden he has an influence on the professional imparting of the contemporary jazz to the next generations.
