Płyta "Master of the Game" jest bardzo rzadkim ostatnio przykładem, który w zachwycie może połączyć zarówno fanów motorycznej, progresywnego grania Esbjörna Svenssona, zróżnicowanej gry Brada Mehldau, ale i lirycznej pianistyki Billa Evansa czy Keitha Jarretta.

Oparte na splatających się ze sobą liniach fortepianu i kontrabasu kompozycje Geoffa Ealesa w swej formule mocno przywodzą na myśl dokonania tragicznie zmarłego szwedzkiego muzyka Esbjörna Svenssona (Eales dedykował mu zresztą jeden z utworów na płycie - "Lachrymosa"). Słychać to zwłaszcza w utworach o szybszych tempach gdzie motoryka odgrywa wielką rolę, a zespół - z niezwykła wprost świeżością - pędzi niczym expres. Dopiero jednak dzięki balladowym tematom, zbudowanych na pięknie brzmiących akordach i uwodzicielskich, melodyjnych tematach, dostrzec możemy niezwykłą harmoniczną dbałość Ealesa. I co ciekawe - jest ona obecna we wszystkich utworach na płycie, ale właśnie w balladach wysuwa się na plan pierwszy.

Różnorodność muzyki, odwołań i wpływów, w pianistyce Ealesa, sprawiają, iż w opisie ta muzyka może wydawać się eklektyczną. Nic bardziej mylnego - jest spójna i jednorodna, nie ma tu kopiowania mistrzów, ale jest rzetelne granie i świetne kompozycje, czerpiącego z tego, co u innych najlepsze. Świetny album!
