"Paradoxical Frog: Union" to druga odsłona tej grupy, zespół już swoim debiutem przyniósł ukształtowaną i wielce oryginalną stylistykę. Tutaj trio prezentuje 9 kompozycji o kunsztownie poprowadzonej narracji, dla których potencjalnych inspiracji można szukać w muzyce Mortona Feldmana, Johna Cage’a, Jamesa Tenney, Pauline Oliveros i wielu innych.

Opowiadając o tej muzyce należy mówić tak jak ona - ściszonym i matowym tonem, a czasem pozwolić słowom wybuchnąć. Opisywać ją, to jak próbować rozwinąć własną, wielokierunkową składnię, polimetrycznie dobrać akcenty słów i właściwą intonację. Nie jest to łatwe, podobnie jak ta muzyka, wymagająca sporego zaangażowania ze strony słuchacza, gdyż niecierpliwe ucho może zbyt łatwo poddać się jej pozornej monotonii. Właśnie w tym - jak mówi Pauline Oliveros - głębokim słuchaniu, obserwacji ukazujących się niespiesznie instrumentalnych tekstur, trio buduje prawdziwe rzeźby dźwiękowe (Repose). Choć ich debiut miał w sobie więcej tonalności, więcej energetycznych fragmentów z gęsto grającym Soreyem - przez co był dla mnie ciekawszy - to i tutaj znajdziemy arabeskowej urody, melodyjne tematy (Figment 2012) i kilka mocnych akcentów Soreya (Fear the Fairy Dust, Union).

Wszystko zmierza w określonym kierunku, ma swoje uzasadnienie i kulminację. Pozornie asymetryczne linie spotykają się, czasem kontrapunktują, budują wewnątrz tego świata spektralne napięcia. Słyszymy fragmenty solowe, duety, wygrywane unisono kilkuminutowe tematy, saksofonowe drony, preparację fortepianu, talerze wykwintnie rozświetlające kolorystykę tria.

„Paradoxical Frog: Union” to znakomity, dojrzały album, dla wszystkich nie bojących się atonalności. Jeszcze większą radość sprawi tym, których cierpliwość pozwoli czekać kilka minut na pojawienie się melodii.

„Paradoxical Frog: Union” is the second presentation of this group, as far back on their debut the band has brought shaped and highly original aesthetics. Here the trio presents nine compositions exquisitely narrated, for which you can find potential inspiration in music of Morton Feldman, John Cage, James Tenney, Pauline Oliveros, and many others.

Describing this music I should speak like this music - with a matte and hushed tone and sometimes let my words explode. Attempting to describe it, is like trying to develop new multidirectional syntax, gravity intonation, polymeter selection of words and accents. It is not easy as the music which requires a substantial commitment from the listener, an impatient, superficial ear can easily give up to its apparent monotony. The point is, as Pauline Oliveros says, deep listening and observation of slowly appearing instrumental textures, and the trio builds here a real sound sculptures (Repose). Referring to their debut there are less fragments of a densely energetically Sorey’s playing, like in Fear the Fairy Dust and Union – but we can still find an arabesque beauty melodic themes (Figment 2012).

Everything is justified moving in a certain direction and culmination. Seemingly asymmetrical lines meet sometimes a counterpoint, build inside this world, spectral nerve. We can hear solos, duets, a few minutes unison themes, saxophone drones, piano preparations and cymbals, that neatly illuminate the color of the trio.

"Paradoxical Frog: Union" is in fact an excellent, mature album for all listeners who are not afraid of atonality and those whose patience let them wait a few minutes until a melody appear. If you can wait, the joy is even greater.

he trio "Paradoxical Frog", made up of pianist Kris Davis, saxophonist Ingrid Laubrock and drummer Tyshawn Sorey made a significant mark with its self-titled debut album in 2010. The three musicians, who all contribute compositions to the group, have a shared ability to create dramatic musical peaks and valleys while moving in and out of a composition in a seamless motion. This is why listeners in NY and all over the world continually seek out this unique and ever changing group. "Union" is the second take of the project, confirming that the music from their first release didn’t simply result from a happy gathering of circumstances. Redefining lyricism in a sometimes angular context, this is jazz with extreme space and dynamics, yet an unapologetic love for conventional tone and a solid sense of tension and release.
