BILL EVANS & LUIZ EÇA
Piano Four Hands
LIVE IN RIO 1979

This release presents a true rarity, Bill Evans playing piano four hands with his Brazilian pianist friend Luiz Eça, in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. This is the only known occasion in which Evans was recorded playing in this format, and also his only known collaboration with Eça, with whom he had played several times before (which explains their excellent communication here). The present set was recorded in Rio de Janeiro on September 29, 1979. Earlier that year, Bill Evans' beloved brother Harry committed suicide. The pianist was devastated and began a run that would lead to his own death on September 15, 1980. However, during the year that separated the two brothers' deaths, Bill would produce a lot of wonderful music. Evans and Eça had been friends for many years, and when Bill toured Brazil, he usually played piano four hands with him at Chiko's Bar. In fact, one of the few Brazilian tunes ever recorded by Bill was Luiz Eça's "The Dolphin", on his 1970 album From Left to Right. Bill Evans sits out on just three tunes, which feature Brazilian stars Cidinho and Leny Andrade.
