Hassan Erraji is a blind oud master who was born in Morocco and is now based in Leeds, England. "Nikriz" is the title track from his debut LP, and it flirts with jazz fusion just enough to arouse general listeners and to worry purist listeners. But the oud is the star here, and its fluttering flamenco sound ought to be enough to distract one from splitting hairs. The albums he's released since this one include some true hard tack for purists among others that intermingle further with jazz and rock.
