Tutaj są to m.in. tradycyjne pieśni irlandzkie i celtyckie w rodzaju "Danny Boy" czy "My Wild Irish Rose", które brzmią zadziowiająco świeżo w nowym zupełnie kontekście, jak również klasyki z katalogów Boba Dylana ("Every Grain of Sand"), Ewana MacColla ("First time ever i Saw Your Face") czy Johna Hartforda ("Gentle on My Mind").

"Luka Bloom is best known as a singer/songwriter whose work is informed by his Irish heritage, but with 2014's Head & Heart, he's offered up a different side of himself. Bloom wrote only two of the 12 songs on Head & Heart, and on the ten covers he reveals he's a skillful interpretive performer who has learned how to express himself through the words of others. This isn't the first time Bloom has devoted the bulk of an album to the work of other songwriters, but there's a real (if understated) passion in his take on traditional songs like "Danny Boy" and "My Wild Irish Rose," which makes them sound fresh and strong in this context, as well as the classics from the catalogs of Bob Dylan ("Every Grain of Sand"), Ewan MacColl ("The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face"), and John Hartford ("Gentle on my Mind"). The originals, "Give You Wings" and "Liffeyside," mesh nicely with the outside copyrights, and demonstrate that Bloom may not be writing much lately, but he's writing well. And for these performances, Bloom is joined by the Phil Ware Trio, an Irish jazz combo led by pianist Ware. The interplay between Ware, bassist Dave Redmond, and drummer Kevin Brady suggests the easily intuitive give and take of a group whose members know one another well, and Bloom takes full advantage of their warm, laid-back sound, while also cleverly weaving himself through their music with this voice and guitar. When songwriters fill albums with other people's songs, it often feels as if they're short on ideas, ambition, or both, but with Head & Heart, Bloom invests enough of himself in this material that the results are genuinely satisfying, and Bloom has rarely sounded this assured as a vocalist."

Editor's Info
With a poet’s heart and a rockster’s soul, Luka Bloom is regarded as one of Ireland’s most respected contemporary folk artists. A master interpreter, Bloom has continued to balance original songs with reinventions of tunes by a diverse range of songwriters. On Head and Heart, Bloom continues to shake up the folk genre with clever new arrangements and reinterpretations of 10 well known classics alongside a pair of self-penned gems, accompanied by a Jazz trio.

“Yes I still buy records, and I still love to make them. This little body of work represents a painless process. Completely out of my comfort zone, in a studio never used before; singing with musicians I had never met before; and performing without rehearsal. Six of the 12 tracks here are with The Phil Ware Trio. Singing with them for two days was an unforgettable experience. I love everything about this record. Only two of the songs are my own. ‘Liffeyside’ is a tribute to the town of Newbridge and it’s surrounds, where i grew up. ‘Give you Wings’ is a lament to the tragic loss of life experienced by so many Belgian families when they lost their children in a bus crash in Switzerland in 2012. The rest of the songs are simply songs I loved before i ever sang them.” - Luka Bloom

“That he scales such emotional heights with just his voice, a guitar and a bagful of heartfelt songs makes Bloom’s achievements even more remarkable.” - Hot Press (Ireland)
