Chociaż kubańska wokalistka Omara Portuondo jest od razu kojarzona z Buena Vista Social Club, nie była jego największą gwiazdą. Ale w odróżnieniu od Ibrahima Ferrera, Compaya Segundo i Rubena Gonzaleza, producent słynnego albumu Ry Cooder nie musiał jej szukać po zapuszczonych ulicach Hawany. Omara była powszechnie znana, ceniona, występowała i nagrywała z oficjalną orkiestrą reżimu Fidela Castro w studiu Egrem będącym na podsłuchu komunistycznych agentów.

No, może trochę przesadziłem z polityką. Na płytę trafiły kubańskie nagrania artystki zrealizowane w latach 1981- 96 we wspomnianym studiu Egrem z innymi gwiazdami muzyki kubańskiej. Powiedzmy to sobie od razu, nie wszystkie wystawiają najlepsze świadectwo Omarze i muzyce kubańskiej. Fatalną pomyłką jest otwarcie albumu piosenką "Este Son Homenaje", którą nasza bohaterka zaśpiewała kiepsko. Ale nie załamujmy się, bo już trzecia piosenka jest prawdziwą perełką zachęcającą do tańca. Co ciekawe, nagrana została w 1996 r., a więc stosunkowo niedawno, co też pozytywnie wpłynęło na jakość dźwięku.

Z przyjemnością wysłuchałem ballady "Habana Travel" zaśpiewanej z Arnaldo Rodriguezem. Oprócz kilku świetnych, latynoskich piosenek wyniesiemy z tej płyty wiedzę o kubańskiej muzyce rozrywkowej czasów późnego Fidela i stwierdzimy, że naród ten wcale nie jest tak nieszczęśliwy, skoro potrafi tak pięknie grać i śpiewać.
