Editor's Info:
The complex system of raga and tala heard in classical Indian music evolved over centuries from the simple songs and rhythms of rural and village people, representing the soul of India. The villagers would sing, dance and play folk songs around fires. The songs on this recording are mostly love songs and melodies Shujaat Husain Khan grew up with and has re-created them from his memories, sung in Hindi and Punjabi. It is the simple beauty of these songs that makes this recording special for the artist - a language that both soothes and excites. While his life has been largely dedicated to the great classical tradition of North India, his heart lies in these simple melodies. Through this music, Shujaat states to the world, "these are the sounds of my roots."
